Home networking question for those in the know:
At home,we have one Compaq computer with an ME OS and one Dell with an XP OS.
We just had techs come and network our computers to road runner high speed with a wireless connection. (pretty swift I must say)
NOW...I am trying to get our computers to share folders and a printer. So first, I went to the network wizard on the ME computer and followed the steps there. I restarted my computer after that and then went to the XP computer to do the same thing. I have done this on the computers I have at work and have been successful networking them together so that they can share files 9never a printer-as I am trying to do now) . Oddly enough, I have a dell and compaq at work with the exact same operating systems. Can anyone think of what I may be doing wrong? The compaq can't see the dell and the dell keeps saying it has some unrecognized hardware. The wireless connection is the only thing that is different from home to work. At work we have a router etc to share Internet connections. Oh thank you to whomever may respond.:argh:

2. I'm not sure but I wonder if the ME and XP
might not work together. Isn't XP have home networking capability while ME does not?

DON'T take this as advice ... I'm thinking aloud ...

3. Are they in the same workgroup?
my computer -> properties -> network name (or something like that)?

Can you see one computer from the other one's network neighborhood?

Have you assigned network addresses (IP addresses) to these computers?
(network properties, right click on the TCP/IP item in the scroll list)?

Can you get to the Internet from both machines? Can you open up a Web page?

4. Did you
Install file and printer sharing on both computers?

Do the folders you want to share have permissions to share (there should be a little hand next to the icon for the folders you want to share (in Windows Explorer)?

Windows networking can be funny sometimes, very quirky. Usually, once you get it working, it will be fine.

You should be able to network these two machines on a home network.

6. networking XP with earlier windows versions is hit and miss
I'd wipe the ME box clean and install XP on it. If that's not an option, perhaps some chanting and casting of bones...

5. You might have to add your ME computer to the XP computer
I think you add it to the workgroup and then give it full access.

8. How sweet! And welcome to DU! We're going to take a look at
these suggestions here and if we can't figure it out from that-I'll email you. I've done this at my workplace and it was very easy using the network wizards on both computers. For some reason-the dell with the XP OS does not show the same wizard as the one I have at work. I know that sounds imossible but tis true :hi:

Been here a while but don't get on too much. Not too much into BBS type of things but the wife (Debbi801) drags my intellect along from time to time when she sees that something would interest me. Good girl that she is.

14. If XP has service pack 2, you might want to look at the firewall
settings in the control panel.

17. Generally in XP SP2
Going from XP to another system it will prompt you to see if you want to open the port for that service. Coming into the XP box though you are most likely to be blocked and not get a dialog box on either system asking you to unblock.
