From the first Journey album, some 3 albums before Steve Perry turned em into a top 40 group.

21. Definitely one of the few
Journey had that short window of opportunity when Gregg Rolie and Steve Perry were in the band. I think they cut two studio albums during that time, maybe three (haven't listened to them in a while).

In any case, the minute Jonathan Cain joined up, they became a top 40 cheese ballad factory.

16. i was into hardcore punk during that time...
journey was so not cool. couldnt handle the high pitched vocals. it was pompous arena rock at its finest. I DO like led zepplin but liked the obscure underground three cord punk much much more.

26. This is the most polarizing band ever. Weird you should bring this up
Edited on Sat Jun-11-05 08:21 PM by smartvoter
because I recently (as in within the last month) read an old review in Rolling Stone. The reviewer said that there was no denying that much of their music is difficult to play (especially Schon -- who was a prodigy asked to join Clapton and Santana at age 15) and impossible to sing, but it was just too polished. The prediction was they would fade out because of the massive overplay.

The next album, Perry dropped his voice three octaves -- which I have been told is how he used to sing pre-Journey (evidently he has a freak-of-nature voice -- can do anything with it) and they went on and on to become even bigger.

You'll see the same thing today that you did 25 years ago. Mention them and you're met with either wild enthusiasm or a barf bag.

I can't think of any other band that has this effect on people.

I never quite understood the LOVE IT OR HATE IT effect this band had on people. I liked them and attended some concerts - I thought they were good.

37. I hated them for two reasons
1. I didn't like any of their songs.

2. One of their songs I didn't like most -- "Lights Go Out in the City" (or whatever it's called) -- used to be played over and over on the radio.
