Ummmm...WTF....a phone company for homophobes??
...The Oklahoma-based long distance carrier, which describes itself as a Christian conservative company, is seeking like-minded customers by bad-mouthing bigger rivals for their "sinful" behavior.

"Our base, which would be a conservative base, really does not like the same-sex marriage that has been pushed down our throat," UAT consultant Carl Thompson told ABC News.

UAT niche markets its service by railing against Internet pornography, homosexuality, and then criticizing competing phone companies it claims promote both.

1. how does a phone company promote homosexuality?
and what does this company do to stop it? Do they block the numbers of well known gays in the community so that they can't call you and convert you to their side?

2. Weird... I have no intention of being married in someone's throat.
In fact... I wouldn't go near enough to someone as hateful as that to even smell his nasty breath.

7. I used Working Assets Long Distance and they support liberal
causes. A great company.

--------
MISSION
Working Assets was established in 1985 to help busy people make a difference in the world through everyday activities like talking on the phone. Every time a customer uses one of Working Assets' donation-linked services (Long Distance, Wireless and Credit Card), the company donates a portion of the charges to nonprofit groups working to build a world that is more just, humane, and environmentally sustainable. To date, over $47 million has been raised for progressive causes.

The company also serves as a strong political force, dedicated to giving its customers the opportunity to speak out on critical public issues through its Web site and monthly phone bill.

DONATIONS
Since 1985, Working Assets has generated over $47 million for progressive nonprofits, including Greenpeace, Oxfam America, Rainforest Action Network, Human Rights Watch, Planned Parenthood, ACLU and People for the American Way, among many others.

Each year Working Assets supports nonprofit groups in five categories: Economic & Social Justice, Environment, Civil Rights, Peace & International Freedom and Education & Freedom of Expression. In 2004 alone, Working Assets raised nearly $7 million in donations for worthy causes.

Every year, a percentage of Working Assets' revenue is placed in a donations pool for annual distribution. Donations come from the top line (sales), not bottom-line (profits), therefore donations are made whether or not Working Assets makes a profit.

Customers can nominate nonprofit groups to receive funding each year. After an independent foundation evaluates the effectiveness of the hundreds of nominees, Working Assets employees and board of directors select 50 groups for the annual donations ballot. At the end of the year, customers vote on how to distribute the donations among the groups.

Customers can voluntarily "round up" their monthly long distance bills, donating the tax-deductible extra amount to Working Assets' general funding program. Working Assets also makes special appeals for round-ups, addressing immediate needs like emergency relief efforts.

ACTIVISM
In 1991 Working Assets created the Citizen Action program to provide customers with timely information and easy ways to speak out on important issues. Each month the company highlights two crucial national issues and five state issues (California, New York, Massachusetts, Oregon and Washington) under debate, explaining what's at stake and whom to contact. The company includes action alerts in its monthly phone bill. Working Assets customers can call the targeted decision-maker free of charge every day of the week, or have a low-cost, well-argued advocacy letter sent on their behalf. ActForChange.com users can take action online free of charge, about urgent issues of the day ranging from U.S. politics to environmental issues.

In 2004 alone, Working Assets customers generated over four million calls, letters and e-mails to Congress, the White House and corporate leaders on issues of critical public concern.

Created in 1995, Working Assets' Flash Activist Network (FAN) is a rapid response program designed to give customers a chance to speak out on fast-moving issues before all is said and done. Throughout the year FAN monitors critical events as they unfold and notifies members by phone, fax or e-mail when it's time for action. Members can call a toll-free number for details on the issues at hand, then be transferred directly to the targeted decision-maker, or send a personalized fax. For a low monthly fee, FAN members can influence public policy before it's too late.

VICTORIES
Working Assets is one of the most powerful progressive citizen-action groups in the nation. Each month, Working Assets customers generate approximately 80,000 calls and letters on important issues of public concern. Some recent political victories include: saving the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge from oil drilling; defeating right-wing judicial appointments, standing up for strict organic food labeling standards and thwarting a dangerous energy policy.

14. "free will" has become "pushed down our throat" -- get this:
Evangelists say mankind has free will. So we are free, in their theology, to reject what is right (their way) and live sinful lives (anything that is NOT their way). More specifically, we're free to reject their "plan of salvation." (It goes like this: "Of course you're free to reject Christ's loving sacrifice. But you're an idiot if you do because you will wind up in hell. This is the only way to heaven.")

But that doesn't stop them from attempting to shove their "plan of salvation" down our throats.

Now: what happened to our free will? Is it "free will" only when they're free to exercise their right to shove what THEY want for the whole world down OUR throats?

Wait a minute... now I'm getting confused...

16. But see, most Fundies believe in the "elect."
Edited on Fri Jun-10-05 03:53 PM by Beware the Beast Man
That is, they have the free will to do right and wrong because they have achieved salvation, while the rest of us are pretty fucked. That's how they get away with believeing in Dominionism and the like: it doesn't matter who you screw over, the world is doomed anyway but they are all saved, so who cares who you harm?

I know I really shouldn't judge, but I believe in God, I believe in Jesus, but I'd also like to think those people won't be joining me in heaven because of their utter contempt for humanity.

10. I love how they always use that term...
Whenever the right discusses same-sex marriage or homosexuality or the gay agenda or whatever, they always talk about it being "shoved down our throats"...

Sounds like they doth protest too much! A little wishful thinking?

12. You know what's funny? The money still goes to the local carrier
Whoever owns the lines leases them to the competitive carriers.

So, even if these homophobic bigots sign up with this company, the "gay-loving" companies will still get money from them.

18. WTF-Ever!!!
For chrissakes - this crap has gotten out of control! Ever since Bush stole his first "mandate" it's turned into bizarro world! People are becoming far more openly racist, homophobic, etc - and they now feel PROUD to say so. Unbelievable.

I see it even within my own family - my "religious" mother has always believed homosexuality was a "sin" - but she mellowed out over the years and became less condemning. UNTIL that facist fuck stole the White House - now she's becoming far more brazen and brainwashed in her homophobic hatred. It disgusts me.
