Question about condos and cost of replacing windows |
|
Hello - I own a small condo in a garden style building. The other day I got a notice in the mail saying that the windows in all the units needed to be replaced and that I was responsible for the costs of doing my own - a whopping $2600!
My question is: is it common for condo owners (who share a building) to be responsible for replacing windows? I had thought that my condo fees would take care of such things.
thanks for any info/advice!

However, the complex has never and I don't think would ever tell us we all HAD to get new windows. Some people here have done it, some haven't.
Are they making you buy from a certain vendor? That doesn't seem right either.
How many windows do you have?
A couple of neighbors of mine just got new windows. They each have six windows and a sliding glass door. One paid about $2200 and the other I think $1700.
The only thing the HOA specifies is that the window border has to be beige, although one old fart got white anyway. :eyes:

3. yes - they are recommending a vendor |
|
and they are also just "recommending" that we replace windows all at the same time. Unfortunately, I just replaced the air conditioner, so I'm a bit cash-strapped.
I have about 6 windows. I may shop around a bit for a better price.
thanks for your post!

4. I'd definitely shop around |

There seems to be quite a range of prices, and honestly, if I'm just looking at them from a distance, a can't tell what's expensive and what's not. That would be the HOA's primary concern, I think, that they look good. The lady I know who spent less, went to an old, very reputable local glass company. I doubt she got a shoddy product.

I hope you are able to resolve this is a way that makes you happy.
I'd love new windows, myself, but we just can't quite swing it now.
