Looks like it dumps the current window. A bitmap is written to the clipboard, which can then be pasted into windows paint or other image handling application.
cntrl-printscreen dumps the entire desktop to the clipboard.
Does this help?

The PrintScreen button by itself will capture everything shown on your monitor at that moment and send it to the Clipboard.
ALT +PrintScreen is good for capturing only the active window (when you see more than one window on your desktop). This is especially useful to capture error messages or other dialog boxes.
Note that PrintScreen only sends the image to the Clipboard. Once you've got a screen capture, then you have to paste that into an application like Word, PowerPoint, Paint, the various graphics applications out there. Whatever.

5. Do you have Photoshop or Paint open before you do the capture? |
|
Some programs, especially the MS-Office suite, wipe out the "copy" you've done when they open themselves.
Then you have to do the copy over before it will be recognized as 'pastable'.

10. Look in your System Tools for the Clipboard Viewer. |
|
Do a PrintScreen capture, and pull up the Clipboard Viewer.
At least then you can isolate the problem. If you get something on the viewer, then it's the target application that's the problem, not the PrintScreen capture.
If you get nothing on the viewer, then maybe it's the keyboard, or the infamous 'intermittent glitch'.

7. Just hit the Print Screen/SysRq button on |
|
your keyboard, then open up MSPaint and hold down ctrl and type the v key on your keyboard. If it asks you if you want it enlarged to fit the screen capture into the window, just click yes. After that, do any editing you want to do and save it as whatever you want to call it.bmp
That should work. I have found some programs won't let you do a screen capture. I know Age Of Empires will do it, but it shows up with a black screen for the action in the game...Sadly.

Any thoughts?

18. Whoa.... flashback city! |
|
I just finished watching the entire series (17 episodes) and now MY screen is a bit flighty, too.... :bounce:
If you're on a Windoze machine, all that's needed is Printscreen. You don't have to use Alt or any other hot key. Then you just need a graphics program you can paste into-- I use an ancient copy of LView Pro 32 for Win95 (simple, yet elegant and it works very well for viewing and cropping pics).
If it's not working, then suspect your keyboard of being bad. There's not really much that can go wrong!

Turn off your PC...totally. Let it rest for a minute. Turn it back on. If you still have this problem after the hard boot, then your keyboard is Fucked. Toss it and get a new one.
Thankfully, they're cheap. :)

Thankfully this laptop has a warranty..I was going to see if they'd do something about this keyboard already, as the letters are actually wearing off. :o
In the meantime, I'll go try out a screen-capture program. Thanks for your help. :)

22. I don't know if you are interested in using a screen capture program, |

but I use a Gadwin PrintScreen. It is free and you can resize screen captures, capture only an outlined area, etc.

I downloaded the Gadwin Printscreen program..and it sets the default key for capturing as "Printscreen", which didn't work, BUT you can change it to another key..so I chose F1 and voila! That works. :)
