Where are the music threads?????
what are guys/gals listening to tonight?

I am listening to the new Sleater-Kinney cd, never have been a big fan until now, the new cd is amazing.

Also, bought the new (kinda) Screaming Trees cd. It is a greatest hits cd but has two amazing songs that were unreleased until recently. Yes I am a grunge era boy.

1. Here's a site where I find out about a lot of new music.
http://www.betterpropaganda.com

A lot of independant labels use it to put out free samples.

13. Nobody ever knows wtf I'm talking about when I post in music threads
I guess I'm the only Goth/Darkwave/J-Rock fan around here.

Oh, and I'm listening to Voltaire. Here's his website. With free downloads and stuff! He's a Goth with a twisted sense of humor, I love him. He also does some funny Star Trek songs. My favorite one is "The USS Make Shit Up", which describes pretty much every Trek episode ever (it predates Enterprise, but the same principle applies).

14. I'm picking the new S-K cd up tomorrow
Well today I guess since it's 4:30 am. I listened to it a few times on their website before the official release and thought it was awesome. Also plan on getting the new Black Eyed Peas cd.

Stuff I already have that has gone through my cd or tape player this week: Bloc Party, Radio 4, Thievery Corporation, Neko Case, and last but not least Joe Strummer.

19. Yesterday, I listened to this one..
Edited on Sat Jun-11-05 10:51 AM by mvd
Faith Hill - Breathe (B-, better than albums Faith (C) and Cry (C+), but worse than Take Me As I Am (B) and It Matters To Me(B+).)

on edit: recommendation for a new artist - Courtney Jaye. Her album is gorgeous.

A gorgeous mixture of renaissance polyphony, Gregorian chant, and proto-Baroque instrumental music.

21. Thoughts on these recent CDs
Edited on Sat Jun-11-05 11:53 AM by mvd
I've heard them on the AOL full album preview page:

http://music.channel.aol.com/songs/fullcds.adp

White Stripes - Get Behind Me Satan (A+ - shows how diverse they are! And their first album without even a little filler.)

Coldplay - X & Y (B - rehashed Coldplay, but has enough tweaking to be a worthwhile purchase)

Black Eyed Peas - Monkey Business (D+ - didn't even get me out of my seat, much less grooving)

Kelly Osbourne - Sleeping In The Nothing (A- - 80s style dance with some modern edge)

Courtney Jaye - Traveling Light (A+ - I love Anna Nalick and also her. She also made my ten most attractive singers - the list now is: Andrea Corr, Anna Nalick, Michelle Branch, Lily Holbrook, Bree Sharp, Avril Lavigne, Lennon Murphy, Nina Gordon, Jenny Lewis, Courtney Jaye.)

Lots of music thoughts to make up for lack of threads! :-)

23. And more music thoughts
Edited on Sat Jun-11-05 12:29 PM by mvd
Bands/albums I've found overrated, disappointing, or bad lately:

Smog (how boring)
Gorillaz (a mess IMO)
Anthony And The Johnsons (really can't stand the vocals)
Audioslave (proficient, but lack personality)
Ben Folds - Songs For Silverman (seems to not have as many soaring melodies)
Dave Matthews Band - Stand Up (lack of focus here, but not bad)
Nikki Cleary - self-titled (by the numbers pop/rock)

Some I want to buy very soon:

Annie - Anniemal
White Stripes - Get Behind Me Satan
Maria Taylor - 11:11
Marion Raven - Here I Am (will even spend for the import!)
Teenage Fanclub - Man-Made
Better Than Ezra - Before The Robots (probably)
Tracy Bonham - Blink The Brightest (I expect to love it)
Miss Mary - Ready 2 Pop
Coldplay - X&Y
Beck - Guero
Raveonettes - Pretty In Black

Also, I just joined a band as a drummer last week. We're sorta jam band-y, a little country-ish, but pretty good.

26. I'm listening to "Red Hot and Blue"
Edited on Sat Jun-11-05 12:29 PM by terrya
"Red Hot and Blue" is compliation cd of current artists (well, current for 1991) who did their own takes of some of Cole Porter's songs. It was a benefit for AIDS research. In fact, just now I was listening to Erasure's version of "Too Darn Hot", which is wonderful and may be one of the gayest things I've heard in some time.
