Lily the cat update
well, I took Lily to the SPCA yesterday. They are doing what they can for her. Her kittens are doing fine - eating good, the woman who is caring for them has had them to the vet. They are in good shape.

I'm letting you know that this is the LAST TIME I'll ever take an animal to the local SPCA. I try to do "the right thing" and I get a load of crap from them like I'm some sort of criminal.

they kept saying - this cat needs medical attention -- well DUUUUHHH - that's why I brought it in - I can't afford anymore vet bill, or any other kind of bills... then they say - why didn't you take up a collection at work to pay for the vet... :eyes: If I had the money or there was enough interest from people at work to pool money together to pay for a vet and someone willing to adopt her -- don't you think I would have done that????

Then they go all ballistic because someone else is feeding and caring for the kittens -- "they need to be with their mother" -- GRRRRRRRR...if the mother was able and willing to care for them then I wouldn't have had to take the kittens away and have someone else feed/care for them... Then it was - "why didn't you contact us sooner?" ARRRRRRGGGGGHHHH! I tried for 2 days to get ahold of you and all I got was a freaking answering machine, left messages and no one got back to me and this was during "regular hours"

I feel like the guy that performed CPR on someone and then was sued for breaking a rib...

Meanwhile - Simone showed up with 3 kittens. Mom and kittens look fine. I'm still trying to get ahold of another shelter in Tunkhannock, hopefully I can get in touch with them today. I have to go into work this morning - so I'm taking along a carrier, hopefully I can get her and the kittens to them this afternoon.

1. Aye caramba
Try to do a good deed and get kicked in the butt!

"Take up a collection at work"...:wtf: I love the assumptions people make.

Are they just trying to get people to throw unwanted animals/animals they can no longer care for on the side of the road instead of take them to the SPCA? If that's the kind of attitude people are going to get when they come in I wouldn't be surprised if they avoided the place like the plague.

I hope yours is a no-kill shelter.

3. They Suck; You Rock
I always recommend Alley Cat Allies http://www.alleycat.org/ when dealing with feral cats; they're hard-core about helping cats. They might be able to at least help you find better (and affordable) vet care for her.

The SPCA people are so used to seeing the worst of the worst that they may have forgotten what a decent human being looks like. That's no excuse for them being bitches, but don't take it personally. Anyone with half a brain can tell that you are a kind and decent person who did the right thing.

4. I wonder what the difference is between the two groups.
I've seen the same thing radfringe describes at our humane society here. The people who volunteer there are overwhelmed with unwanted animals, and it really does come out in their attitude. The people who run feral rescues have very good attitudes. They work just as hard as the people at the HS, but they seem to take joy in it. The people at the HS just seem defeated.

5. I Think The HS May See More Abuse/Cruelty
HS workers may have to deal with more people who intentionally harm animals while rescue groups may see more people who want to help abuseed animals. Just a guess, though.
