It's the logical progression: first there was violence and confusion, then there were gods for everything from the rocks to the hunt, then we winnowed them down to a few dozen or so gods--which helped to systematize and promote the inherent violence--then we hammered it down to merely one god. The logical progression would be then to have none. Works for me.
