I got a lot from my grandmother, but this is my fave: you'll notice in birthday threads, I always put "have your best yet!"

1. This how I always greet the neighbors when they come over: |
|
Get the hell off my property!
No, I'm known in my neighborhood as the "Have a snickerdoodle" man because that's what I always say. I leave a lot of them in my old mailbox at the end of the lane with a recording that goes off when anybody walks by that says, "Have a snicklerdoodle, Partner!"

2. Many happy returns of the day |
|
I put that on every single birthday card. It's become a family joke. I told my mom yesterday it should probably go on my tombstone - she wasn't quite sure whether to laugh or not.
Also, I tend to say 'needs must' which always requires explanation and 'chance would be a fine thing' which makes people act like I just started spouting gibberish.
All common English phrases but in America.... well, we don't speak the same language.
Khash.

9. I was wondering for a moment |

As they didn't strike me as particularly odd - the old 2 countries divided by the same language thing.
My only contributions to the lexicon are "cheerybyes" as a parting term (a pretty obvious construction 'trainwrecking' cheerio and good bye - which I think does stand up to scrutiny in that it becomes a de facto contraction of " cheer be with you"); and as an expression of shock "bugger me backwards with a fish-fork" - I fear I can't remember the origin of that, it was way back at grammar school and I don't use it that much these days.

Actually, that's Dorothy Parker, but gosh, it comes in handy so darned often.

If you have nothing to hide, don't act like you're hiding something.
One my mom used to say: If my grandmother had wheels, she'd be a trolley car.

Margaret Houlihan said this in the TV series MASH. It is sometimes a useful phrase.

Daughter #3 insists that I include this one: "two sinks, clean and empty, counter tops, stove and table" That's apparently my mantra for describing what I expect when the kitchen is supposed to get done. It's a mom thing.
