I'm friendly with my kids and a lot more lenient than my wife but when I give them "The Glare" they know to stop. 23. I accidentally called my dad "dude" a few times in the last few years

He didn't even blink, but I'm not making a habit of it. My s.o. calls him "dadoo", and my dad loves it. I call my sister "dude" all the time, and she calls me "dude" back. My mom stays out of it mostly. :P

Of course, we're all grown up now. If I'd called my dad "dude" in my teenage years, chances are I wouldn't be here to talk about it. :D

Western civilization has been brought about largely by people allowing their children to address non-family adults by their first names.

We get a fair amount of (good-natured) ribbing from our neighbors about this, because we fall into the habit of calling some of them Mr or Mrs so-and-so because that's the way we refer to them when we're talking to our kids--and these are people who are younger than us.
