I was hoping for the home entertainment center and year's supply of free douche.
James Cotton is a friend of mine, by the way. Some blues there.

Met him back in 1968, when he was playing the Roxy in Boston. We were in school in southern Maine. Went backstage, and found out the band didn't have a gig for a week, so we invited them to come live with us (we were in a very progressive school - VERY liberal). They followed us there - about 90 miles - and stayed with us at this ultra-white New England liberal arts college. Luther Tucker, James, the other guys, with meal tickets, standing in line in the cafeteria. Can you imagine that?
Every night, in our coed dorm nestled in the snow-covered woods, the band jammed for us. Seven nights. Seven shows just for us.
The guys laid every female in sight, except for OldLeftieLawyer, who was sleeping with the Dean of Students.
Years later, I made my way into backstage at a club in DC where James was performing. He looked up at me, greeted me by name, and proceeded to roll a fabulous joint, which we both smoked while we caught up on thirty years. Then he went onstage with his fly open.
I love the guy.
Lately, he's been off on a throat cancer gig, but word is that he's doing all right - playing, but not singing.
James is sort of forever, you know?

that is a fantastic story!! :wow: Thank you for sharing it with me. I am an admirer of his work, although I don't own any of his solo stuff, I am very familiar with his work and I think he is one of the great harp players of all time

I had been telling MrOldLeftieLawyer the James Cotton story for years, and he always sort blew me off. He never quite took it seriously. So, when he saw that James was appearing in town, he said, sort of tongue in cheek, "Wanna go see your old buddy?"
So we went.
The roadies didn't want to let us backstage. I told them to tell James one of his old college friends was there to see him (James is illiterate). They sort of looked at me, but we got in.
MrOldLeftieLawyer stood by and watched as we toked. James, at one point, leaned into me and said, "You still like 'em pretty, dontcha?"
MrOldLeftieLawyer sat in the car that night, before we drove home, banging his head on the steering wheel, saying, over and over, "I can't believe I turned down the chance to get high with James Cotton!"
I told him we had to find a Krispie Kreme real fast.
(Get some of James' old stuff, with Luther and the real skinny boys. That's my favorite stuff. If you can't find it, PM me, and I'll send you copies.)
