I run a
hard rock web site when I'm not hanging around here, and I gave Metallica both barrels when they declared war on Napster: "Is this the same Metallica that encouraged their fans to bootleg their concerts?...It's okay to break the rules as long as THEY'RE benefiting?...By the way, Lars, there's a cure for preventing your music from becoming a 'commodity'--GIVE IT AWAY FOR FREE!" When
Camp Chaos declared war on Metallica, I was more than happy to link their cartoons to my site. I even bought one of their T-shirts and gave it away in a contest.
The black album was such a disappointment that when I named Pantera's
Vulgar Display Of Power as my 1992 album of the year, I described it as "the album Metallica THOUGHT they made." And two years ago this month when the St. Anger album was released, I "translated" one of their press releases:
Due to the unprecedented level of anticipation and the prevalence of sub-standard versions of METALLICA's upcoming CD St. Anger, already in circulation, Elektra Records has moved up the release date of the new album, from Tuesday, June 10, to Thursday, June 5.
“Due to the unprecedented level of substandard music on St. Anger which is eroding the unprecedented anticipation, Elektra Records have moved up the release date to insure maximum sales before the whole truth comes out.”
Elektra and METALLICA have taken this extraordinary measure to ensure that counterfeit copies of the band's first studio album in six years do not proliferate in the marketplace.
“Elektra and METALLICA have taken this extraordinary measure to pre-empt the lukewarm response to the release of the St. Anger single to rock radio.”
...this is a rare exception to standard release policy for the label, pointing out that demand...warrants every measure be undertaken to prevent unauthorized leaks of St. Anger...
“Having announced earlier that St. Anger will ship one million copies, the demand must be kept inflated because the unauthorized leaks indicate that album isn't that good, which will cut down on the shipping orders.”
In the past year, superstar artists such as EMINEM and 50 CENT have both moved up their respective release dates to stem illegal piracy...
“EMINEM and 50 CENT deliberately leaked their first singles onto the Internet in order to encourage file sharing and get media attention by complaining about the piracy issue. Since their music was of acceptable quality to their fans, the scheme worked...”
...METALLICA have conjured up a slew of unique activities and promotions to celebrate the release of...St. Anger...
“METALLICA have conjured up a slew of unique activities and promotions because they know St. Anger isn't strong enough to survive on its own merits and will tank after a quick 1-2 million copies sold. Of course, they'll blame it on downloading.”
I've thrown away all my Metallica memorabilia except my
Master Of Puppets album: I don't believe in destroying works of art, and it's something to remember Cliff Burton by.
