I just had a Sonic try to charge me 25% sales tax
Edited on Sun Jun-12-05 12:42 PM by Dave Sund
Attempted to order a combo meal at 4.69. When they brought it out to me, they told me: your total is 5.85. I'm like, wait a minute. I don't wanna be a pain in the ass or anything, but isn't this 4.69? The girl says, yeah, all that extra stuff is taxes. Apparently she's a student at an Omaha Public School. I informed her that would mean they're charging 25% in taxes. Rather than bitch about it to her manager, I just said 'forget it,' and let them keep the food.

Anyone else have anything like that happen to them before?

12. I have dyscalculia
I can't calculate two-digit or higher numbers in my head. And I am currently employed in retail. If I were checking you out, and the computer broke down, you'd probably assume I'm rather stupid.

22. This kept happening at a local supermarket
I jest not, the cashiers guessed how much the groceries would cost (just think of the time involvedin hand processing large trolleys of shopping), they were told to under-estimate deliberately. This meant that whenever it happened folk would call their chums on mobile phones letting them know it was time for a bargain.

2. How did you know where she went to school?
Sounds like this was a mistake, obviously, but I'm not sure why it's relevant where she went to school, even if you did know this information. Did you know her personally? People make mistakes. I gave a customer the incorrect change once at my first job once. It happens.

4. I kid

My brother went to an OPS school, after transferring out of the school I graduated from. I've got nothing against OPS, except that they really don't expect much out of their students. It's beside the point anyway. I don't think it was her fault. It could have been a mistake on her part, but I'm thinking it was a computer problem, given that she informed me the same exact thing happened to the customer next to me.

Sorry if any of you took that the wrong way. It was a jab at the public school system in the wrong place.

7. That's okay
It's hard to convey humor with black and white words. A lot of times, people are serious when they say those things. Public education has been under attack lately, it seems.

8. It's not her.
I was a carhop in high school for Sonic. They give you (the carhop) two tickets w/ the total on them-one for the customer and one for the carhop to keep (proves who delivered the order). She didn't even take the order-either the speaker or the fountain took it.
She's just telling you what the ticket says for the total.

She seemed a little overwhelmed when I said all this. I really wasn't trying to be a pain in the ass, but damn, 25% sales tax?

11. Computers are messed up.
You might want to bring it to the attention of the manager. S/He will do their best to fix it and usually offer you something free in the process. They want repeat business and are willing to do something extra to get it.

9. Nope but yesterday
I was behind this woman who thought her sales tax had been calculated wrong..and she just wouldn't let it go..I'm pretty sure the sales person had it right. But, our sales tax is 8.25% so I can see where it seems to be too much..

15. Nope. They are blue.
As far as the tax error, I'd guess there was something messed up in their computers or someone input the wrong code or some such.

That's not an excuse for them ripping you off, but I thought it was worth a mention.
