I'm having a hysterectomy on Friday.
I'm a little nervous about this. The only surgeries I've had were a laparoscopy a few years ago and my tonsils out when I was a kid.

Dang.... I hope I'm up and about in a few days like the doc said!

She was off work for six weeks and was pampered and waited on by yours truly. She came through just fine, don't do anything strenuos, and DON'T LIFT ANYTHING.

5. Catshrink, best wishes to you
Is it being done through laparoscopy? Mine was done through the abdomen. PM me if you have any questions. Either way you have nothing to worry about. You will come through just fine!

6. I had one in 1997
It really wasn't bad at all - I was up and about pretty quick afterwards with a minimum of pain.

After the initial shock wore off, the advantages became apparent. Every time a friend whispers to me, "Do you have a Tampax I could borrow?", I smile contentedly and say, "nope!"

Follow your doctor's orders and I'm sure you'll be fine. Good luck!

8. Thank you all for your good wishes!
I'm just trying to get everything done ahead of time -- like buying extra cat litter -- so I won't need to lift for a while.

It's unnerving to have this hanging over me -- I'm sure when it's over I'll feel better and the anxiety would have been for naught.

9. I had mine in 2001. Best thing I ever did.
They did mine through the vagina, so I was up and about in a few days, back to work in two weeks. No worries, and boy is it nice to not have that menstrual pain in the ass anymore!

10. I had mine back in 1990...They took everything, at my request, which
my doctor agreed to...So mine was abdominal, which takes a bit longer to recover from.
They had me out of bed the next morning; you most likely will be up then also. It is not good to lie around in bed; you're more likely to have complications if you do. Your bowels will work sooner and in fact everything works better if you get up soon after the surgery. I had very little pain per se; but I did feel as though my insides had been scrambled up. Walking around helps this go away as well...also staying in bed too much makes it more likely that you'll have a fever since lying down keeps your lungs from functioning well...

So: get up as soon as they let you, cough and deep breath while in bed and try not to worry! You'll be fine.

BTW, my 8 week recovery was good. It took 6 weeks to get recovered from the surgery; the last 2 weeks was like a vacation. In fact, since I could not go back to work yet, I went with my husband to a conference in Washington D.C. and had a blast.

You will be fine; and there will be no more periods, worrying about getting pregnant, and like that! I found I was extremely liberated by having my hysterectomy, and I hope you will feel that way too!

11. I am sure that it will go just fine
My mother and step mother both had them last year as did a coworker. It sounds like as long as you take it easy for the recommended time that you'll be fine.

13. Miz t. had one several years ago. No sweat.
Hope you have somebody to give you a little TLC for a few days.
Miz t. was VERY apprehensive.
She hates hospitals.
Afterwards she said "Not so bad. I went to sleep, I woke up, and it was over. The hospital food was pretty good. And I got some really cool drugs."
Enjoy the really cool drugs.
We're pullin' for ya'.

14. I had one in 91
Best thing ever.

Three weeks later I was hiking Hercules Glade National Forest looking for a downed weather balloon.

However, I'm an idget sometimes. I was tired.

You should feel pretty good after a couple of weeks, although not quite up to par.

To not have to worry about periods ever again was such an awesome thing. Healing thoughts and best wishes to you.

16. My wife just had one a couple months ago
While at first it was disorienting for her to miss her periods (she still had quite a few years before menopause) and to realize her womb was gone, now she has embraced it and made it a part of who she is.

She had to have this operation (her state of health was at risk), and now that she's recovered from it, she has no regrets. She even loves the fact that we can do the nasty without worrying about whether a "surprise" is going to occur (as do I, in fact...we have three kids already, so it's kind of liberating).
