Poll question: Your thoughts on summer |
|
Edited on Sun Jun-12-05 03:34 PM by mvd
Since summer has unofficially started, and will be officially starting soon! My thoughts: too many hot days. It seems that winter, at least where I am, isn't as consistently cold as summer is very warm or hot.

Yes, it can get hot. But I'd much rather deal with that... |
|
than 20 degree weather and snow and ice and layering yourself with coats, sweaters, gloves, caps, scarves (I live in Chicago. The "lake effect" can be brutal in winter)
Summer is my favorite season. :-)

4. I can understand that in Chicago |
|
It can get cold here, but 20 degree weather for highs is pretty rare. I hate the humidity in the summer here.

9. It can get humid here also, mvd. |
|
It was a bit humid here earlier this week.
My way of dealing with the humidity is drawing the blinds, turning on the fans and taking cool showers. And lots of cold water!
Still rather deal with that than winter, though. :-)

how the days are long. Good suggestions, terrya - still, on many summer days, I find I can only be outside for long in the evenings. In the winter, I put on a heavy coat. I don't like the cold either, but if I had to, I'd pick winter as better. :-)

1. Not too keen right now. |
|
It is dark as night outside, Severe weather coming in the next 20 minutes. 70 MPH winds are going to bring more of my trees down at the farm. Kansas, you just never know.
Otherwise I love it.

stuffy right now. I like summer for going to the lake and chillin' in the fresh water, but back at home, it's oppressive.:-(

3. Only one draw-back i.m.o. |
|
A vast array of men (myself most certainly not included) start walking around without their shirts - in a few cases this is pure pleasure, but the vast majority quite frankly can't pull it off.
Apart from that small complaint, it is the most wonderful time of the year.

Now who would want to do that?
Besides, it's illegal to pull it at all in America.

6. Too much energy to get comfortable |
|
Like in the winter, I can put on my fleece tops, turtlenecks, fuzzy socks and stay toasty warm.
But in the summer, bad news: I can't strip down far enough just to get cool and not be busted for indecent exposure. The good news iced tea, an outdoor grill, and a water hose.

Not a big fan of heat and I'm a college kid so summer means all my friends head back to their hometowns. Trying to stay busy by going to class and working, just now getting into a groove where I'm not lonely/bored out of my mind.

12. Here in the Bay Area, I love summer |
|
In Vermont, I didn't like it so much - too humid. But here, though it gets quite hot at times, there's always a nice breeze and there's almost no humidity. The nights here in the mountains where I live get comfortably cool because of the fog rolling in, then it warms up and gets gorgeous during the day. Naked sunbathing on my deck and an ice cold Margarita - oh, yeah, I love summer!

14. I have different feelings about the summer time. |
|
One I do not like the heat. You can put more clothes on in the winter, there is only so much you can take off and stay legal in the summer.
I love the storms, I like to watch them roll in and listen to them talk.
I like some of the things that go on in the summer. but I also LOVE christmas. SO I am torn between the two.

In the summer all the idiots have thawed and are out fucking EVERYWHERE, it's all humid and everything is sticky, you sweat like a pig, air conditioning kills the ozone, and people who shouldn't show skin SHOW A LOT OF IT!
Ugh, give me the Winter where I can leave the house in a nice black coat with a scarf and there's practically no one out!

19. oh, thanks for that. You hit another one on the head, the people |

showing all their blubber. You can't get away from it. So many people think that it is okay to show their fat middles and lots else. There are few people who have really good bodies. Oh and the sweating. I have almost been in the house constantly the last week or so with the heat wave as so dislike sweating and being uncomfortable.

have an aversion to working in the rain, so we have to go do field visits in the summer, and frankly, screw that.
The only worthwhile thing about summer is the birding in early summer, the butterflies, and access to the high country.

|
And bad in other ways. I like the fact that there is more daylight, that there is so much green, and that it is not cold. I don't like the mosquitoes or how hot that it gets. I preferred the spring when I lived in Ohio. Here in Wisconsin, it seems to go from winter to summer and vice versa without much in between.

...summer is godawful!! It's the longest 6 months of the year.
The heat is inescapable; the daily highs climb to the 80s in earliest May and don't drop below that again until November.
The humidity is relentless, averaging about 80%. I've seen plenty of nights with ten degree heat indices at midnight.
Average summer's day here has a high in the mid to upper 90s, with a heat index over 100. And the wind does not blow unless you're right on the beach, 30 miles south of here.
Mosquitoes are plentiful as well, since Mobile is built on what was once marsh and swamp. In fact, malaria plagues were once pretty common here.
The only warm weather respite is when big storms come off the Gulf of Mexico and that's a mixed bag. If it's like Arlene was, it's a godsend. More times than not, though, it's cause for concern.
I'm a freak for autumn, but here, fall weather is rare and late, coming in spots as Thanksgiving draws near. Though it's not exactly Vermont, even north-central Alabama (where I grew up) had more distinct seasons than this. I miss the sensual palette of fall, the colors and smell of fallen leaves, the sound of the tree limbs rustling in the breeze, the faint aroma of smoke, the nip in the evening air.
Late autumn and early spring are nice here, and winter is fine. Of course, you have to watch for the schizoid winter weather where you'll be in a sweater and coat on one day and sweating in shorts the next.
