having a nostalgia moment here . . . |
|
I recently ran across a box of my parents' record albums . . . and decided to pick one out and play it . . .
wow, nostalgia rush! . . . I s-o-o-o-o-o remember this record, every note of it . . . in fact, I used to like it a LOT, before I discovered rock 'n roll . . .
so what's this gem? . . . Songs of the Fabulous Thirties, Part 2 by David Rose and His Orchestra . . . strictly 50s MOR stuff, to be sure, but it has a certain soothing quality that takes me back to my childhood . . .
the cuts, for those who may be interested, are . . .
Side 1 1. Peanut Vendor 2. Deep Purple 3. Two Hearts In 3/4 Time 4. Body And Soul 5. Little Old Lady 6. Begin The Beguine
Side 2 1. Thanks For The Memory 2. I'm In The Mood For Love 3. How Deep Is The Ocean 4. Exactly Like You 5. And The Angels Sing 6. Stormy Weather
love it! . . . :)

1. I remember my folks had Sing Along with Mitch albums. |
|
Mitch Miller was the band leader; it was cool because the albums came with song sheets so you could "sing along". Mitch kind of looked like the devil though, with a very pointy goatee. LOL

2. I remember the Sing Along with Mitch TV show. |
|
They'd show the lyrics on the screen and a little ball would hop along to show you the word you should be singing.

3. A note on that, among other things. |
|
I understand that Leslie Uggams sang with Mitch Miller and the Gang (or whatever they were called at that point) on TV, and racist types got all huffy about a woman of color being featured. They wanted her moved to the back. Miller's response was to make certain she was up in the front row.
As for nostalgia, surely someone else here grew up listening to the parents' Mr. Acker Bilk albums. "Stranger on the Shore," "Take My Lips," and all that.

No telling how many 60's born children were conceived to Acker Bilk albums!

6. didn't run across any Mr. Acker Bilk albums . . . |
|
but I did find "Quiet Village: The Exotic Sounds of Martin Denny" and "Boots With Strings" by Boots Randolph -- with brief liner notes by Boudeleaux Bryant . . . :)
when stereo was first introduced, there was a whole spate of demonstration albums designed to let you experience what stereo was all about . . . when my folks bought a stereo -- I think in the very early 60s -- they also bought several of these albums . . . I'm looking at "Provocative Percussion, Volume III" by Enoch Light and the Light Brigade . . . it's on Command Records, and the description of stereo is "The greatest advance in sound since high fidelity was invented!" . . . also found "Stereo 35MM," also by Enoch Light and His Orchestra, which is songs from movies . . . great stuff! . . .
