Guys, what can you say about vasectomies? |
|
Edited on Sun Jun-12-05 07:04 PM by DontBlameMe
I'm planning on having one in the next month or so and am curious what to expect.
Any input, positive or negative, appreciated.

8. I have a very good friend |
|
who had one done after the birth of his only son, he and his wife had decided they wanted no more children.
He said it was quick and painless, the only thing annoying about it submitting a semen sample several times after the procedure to make sure nothing is swimming.
He claims it's the best thing he has ever done!

12. No, I think it's great! |

My husband wants to get a vasectomy, but I've persuaded him to wait a bit. No decent insurance at the moment... but it seems the reasonable thing to do. Much easier than getting tubes tied, for exampble.
Everyone I know who has had one has had a good experience, and many are very vocal about it.
Good luck!

4. My husband had one last year, it was a pretty fact procedure |
|
then he laid in bed for the weekend with a bag of ice and some scotch. The biggest thing when you are recovering is to just lay down for at least 1 full day or else you may strain something.

you're gonna have to go by the lab a few times to make sure it worked so make sure your wife and you use some form of birth control until they give you the all clear.

Went to work the next day-went to the shooting range the afternoon after. Very little pain or swelling- Jorge is a great urologist.
Fourteen years later, no complaints. Real men have vasectomies.

13. The operation was mildly uncomfortable at times. |
|
You know that pain that only men understand? (Of COURSE you do!) A lesser version of that.
Followed the doctor's instructions to the letter and had virtually no other discomfort.
Wish I'd done it sooner.

Mine was scheduled as the last one for the week by a urologist who was late for a flight to a medical conference.
From the novocaine injections to the start of surgery was about 5 seconds. Needless to say there was more than a small amount of discomfort. He blew through the rest of the procedure in record time.
Although I had no swelling, there was a dull ache for a couple of days.
Don't forget, the procedure is surgery! It is not painless and does not heal instantly.
By the way, have someone else drive you that day, and try not to sit on any hard chairs for a couple of days!

15. one of the best decisions I've ever made-- congratulations... |
|
...in advance. Your vasectomy will free you from concerns about unwanted or simply unexpected fatherhood, but even more important, it will free your partner from birth control hormones. It will make your sex life a simple joy. Sterilization is SO EASY for males-- I've never understood why women don't simply insist on it if they don't want children. I think of it as simple respect for my partner. I had my vasectomy 25 years ago, a few months after my daughter was born. It was one of the best long term decisions I've ever made. Kudos to you.
In terms of what to expect-- you'll likely need to shave the base of your scrotum the night before (I assume things are done pretty much the same). The actual surgery is painless and without any distress whatsoever-- my doc and I had a running conversation while he did it. You may feel a slight tugging sensation when he pulls the vas free-- again, it was not uncomfortable at all, in my experience. Afterward, the incision will be a little sore for a day or so, but not badly-- I don't remember any real discomfort at all, and the incision is tiny. My ex once went on a long and ultimately quite fun search for the scar. She never found it, despite my encouragement....

16. mine seemed fine at first |
|
I had it done while I was in the Army, no issues for several weeks, did the ice thing, followed the doctors suggestions and everything. But about 2 months later it still felt like I was getting kicked in the balls a couple times a day. It got to the point where it was a constant pain thing. Have had it looked at and reopened but no physical damage. Seems that sometimes there is nerve damage and it happens something like 1 in every 1000 vasectomies. It shows up as all sensation (that is right I said all sensations) are translated as pain. Kind of feels like your being kicked in the balls all the time. It has gotten better over the years and although it effected my separation from the Army after 12 years and it hasn't got in the way of all of the important things... I am much better now on most days but it is a potential side affect that I was never told about. It can make you grumpy let me tell you. Still after all this time. I would have still done it but maybe somewhere else? Army Hospital here in Colorado was not at fault in theory but I often think that maybe it was. I know one other person with the same issue and he was done here at Evans as well. Just on the short side of the 1 in a 1000? Couldn't get that lucky in the lottery...

19. When my ex had his, it was relatively easy. |
|
Bags of frozen peas are your best friends. His only problem was that his wife was too irresistible and he should have errr.. waited longer than he did because that made him a lot more sore. Wait at least 48 hours for that (no matter how good you think you feel).
He's quite content now that he's single to not have to worry about knocking anyone up either.

...My wife and I were out having Margaritas right after I left his office, in order to celebrate.
Plus, you are also helping your significant other from having to take the "pill" which can literally have cancerous effects. And you can't put a price on someone's life.

23. Mine wasn't a big deal |
|
(Of course, this is Mr.CornField typing. Every so often Lyn commands that I answer a question like this. :) )
In spite of the fact that Lyn went off on the registration nurse (because they wanted her to sign a permission form), the day was very uneventful. I felt nothing that first day.
The following day was semi-painful, but nothing the prescription they gave to me couldn't knock out. The second day was just achey and the third day was almost normal. I was doing whatever I wanted within 4-5 days maximum.
I do recommend getting a good jock to wear after the procedure. The support does help. Also, ice packs will be your friend at first. The best part is that it is such a minor thing for me to do. Lyn has given us three beautiful children. I really didn't want her to have yet another hospital stay when I could do something to prevent it.
Good luck!
