Words that don't get used as often as they should anymore. |
|
I'll start:
"Monkeyshines"
How come you don't hear the word "monkeyshines" used anymore? It really sums up its idea very nicely.

8. And for everyone else like me |
|
Who doesn't know what that means:
That once was; former: “the quondam drunkard, now perfectly sober”
Thanks Redstone, I learned something today.

As in wow, she's got moxie. Now people use a vulgar sexist phrase, like she's got balls.

22. But "shenanigans" doesn't mean the same thing as |
|
"bullshit" does. Actually, the word the other poster used, "monkey shines" is closer.

To replace the overuse of the word 'hate'. I loathe a lot of things, but there are very few things I actually hate.

also I love "local constabulary" or the phrase "take to task". My husband was brought up in the country and he often "trades with these folks" or at other times he "doesn't have any truck with these folks." Sometimes local pronunciations are interesting as well. I was going out on a boat with some friends in upper Michigan. The captain told us that if we didn't have life jackets we could use the kooishins. I asked him what a kooishin was and he lifted up a stuffed plastic pillow. We said, "Oh...the Cushions!" After he left another friend said, "Hey, look at this! We can have Ko-i-tis on the Koo-ishuns!"
