2. Google
I couldn't believe I used to be an AltaVista guy until about 3 years ago. I went to deja.com for DejaNews, found out that Google bought out DejaNews, and realized that the new Google Groups was a billion times better and faster and with a billion times less banner ads than DejaNews. I quickly discovered that Google kicked AltaVista's butt when it came to searching for websites, too.

5. Google is God.
Note to webmasters: Google rewards those who make their site bot-friendly better than any other search engine.

My site get gobs of traffic from Google because I do a few very simple things:

1) I remove dead links promptly.
2) I don't try to fool Googlebot.
3) I've got a kick-ass robots.txt file
4) I update my site with new content constantly.

There are lots more you can do to improve your Google Ranking with patience and experimentation.
