After 15 years or so of loving "Brass In Pocket" by The Pretenders...
I FINALLY found out the mystery word-

"Gonna use my SIDESTEP"! Call me crazy but i could NEVER figure it out!

It took having the subtitles on while watching "Lost In Translation"... go figure...

okay- so who else here never got it?

3. Yeah, I knew a guy who did subtitling...

Every once in a while he'd call ME to ask if I knew some lyric or another... I thought I told him the line was "...gonna use my Segway..." but I was just guessing.

:)

On edit: I actually thought it was "...gonna use my sassy..." as it sort of fits in with style and that kind of stuff. Although I really HATE the word "sassy"...

11. Segway! lol
That's clever! Now no matter what I think it MIGHT be- every time I hear it now I'll think "Segway" Gee, thanks pal! heheh

yeah i hated "sassy", too. She has too much class to ever use "sassy" in any circumstance.

4. Skank
http://www.pretendersarchives.com/discography/Songs-B.html

Brass In Pocket single
(Pretenders)
C. Hynde/J. Honeyman-Scott

Their "signature song" (for the first batch of fans). Brass was on the charts for 17 weeks and reached #1. The US release of the single was called "Brass In Pocket (I'm Special)".

The mysterious lyrics to Brass have baffled listeners for nearly two decades. What is "reet"? And what might a "new skank" be? "Got bottle - I'm gonna use it..."? It's not as mind-boggling as one might think. Skank is to move one's body rhythmically from side to side, moving the arms along with the rest of the body. "Reet" means righteous. So what's she talking about? She's got herself a new way of movin' and groovin' and it's hip. As for the not-so-listener-friendly "got bottle...", that is British slang meaning "courage or confidence".

12. I know what Skank or skanky means...
from all dem skanky riddems, m'boss.

So "sidestep" makes sence in this context.

8. Yeah, but there are a lot of incorrect lyrics out there, and you'll
find the same ones on site after site---so beware. There's someone on DU convinced that "Walk This Way" lyrics say "backstroke lover" instead of "backseat lover"--all because he or she found the incorrect lyrics out there in several places!

9. I usually use my "offswitch" when the Pretenders come on
"Brass in pocket" and "Back to Ohio" were notorious for sticking in my head for days.
I would have thought it was "sashay" but I used to think it was "excuse me, while I kiss this guy" and "blondie by the light". So what do I know.

14. I used to like "Brass in Pocket"
until I made the mistake of doing a very slightly sultry dance to it for my now ex.

He requested I do that every time it came on the radio, to the point it wasn't fun anymore.

Unfortunately, I now associate that song with him and I can't stand to even hear it anymore. Whenever I hear that song now, I turn the station as fast as I can.
