Woman Dies After Her Vehicle Runs Over Alligator, Hits A Tree
<snip>

SAVANNAH -- A Savannah woman died Friday from injuries she suffered in a Tuesday wreck on U.S. 17 when her vehicle ran over an alligator and then struck a tree, according to authorities.
Jasper County Coroner Martin Sauls identified the woman as 66-year-old Johnnie Brown. He said she died at Memorial Health University Medical Center in Savannah.

"She was traveling down the road and hit a fairly good-sized alligator and flipped the car," said Mike Hodges, director of Jasper County's emergency services.
The crash occurred on Jasper County's stretch of U.S. 17 near the South Carolina-Georgia border, he said.

The S.C. Highway Patrol could not provide details about the wreck Friday.

4. How awful. I've driven on U.S. 17 many times when visiting the lowcountry

Alligators are very common in the area. The golf courses include gators lounging in the roughs. I saw one at Hunting Island (SC) State Park in November one year. It was a warm and sunny day and it had crawled out to bask on the side of a park road. It was about 5 feet long. There is a HUGE mama gator who lives in a pond at the visitors center. She has baby gators each year.

10. The golf course ads in local magazines show gators on the greens!

It's sort of like a water hazard only deadly! :)

The gator I saw most recently had probably just eaten and was napping in the sun. I stayed more than 15 feet away from it They are very cool animals! Just don't bother a mama's nest. That's when they get really unhappy!

12. Camel? My family hit a huge hog with a 1974 Pontiac Grand Safari wagon.
Rural NC, early 1970s: hog dead. Only slight dent in front bumper of behemoth tank of a vehicle.

19. He was out of the country. I am not
sure which country he was in but it was one with deserts. He was driving his car along a dirt road in the middle of nowhere and he came upon a hill and there was a camel. He hit the camel and it sent his car careening in the air. It threw him out of the car and killed him. I am not sure what happened to the camel. I realized how absurd this story sounded as I was typing about it, but it is true.

8. My cousin was killed recently because of the same situation
He was driving near Lake Okeechobee and there was an alligator in the road. He swerved to miss it, and lost control of his truck. The truck flipped over into the canal, and my cousin drowned.

17. That's terrible
I am so sorry for your loss. I hit a gator on US 27 near Belle Glade one night. It was a long miserable night as I waited by my disabled vehicle waiting for someone to send a wrecker. In the morning I looked and each side of the road dropped off into swamp. I was lucky to stay on the asphalt.
