Has "The Family Guy" Surpassed "The Simpsons"? |
|
I'd never thought that I say this ever, but IMHO, Family Guy has now surpassed The Simpsons. I'm sorry, but's it a funnier show. The satire, esp. the political satire, is more biting and on point. The various cultural references throughout Family Guy are just brilliant, and that show goes places that I think The Simpsons are too afraid to go. To me, "The Simpsons" tries too hard to be acceptable to the mainstream, whereas Family Guy doesn't really care.
I say, "The Family Guy" rules the comedy animation world.
Okay, you may flame me now.

1. Easily. No question about it. |
|
That is as far as current episodes.
Each in their prime is a real argument.

The Simpson's has pretty much run its course, I'm afraid.
Same thing will happen to Family Guy.
It's just too difficult keeping a show "fresh" for more than 10 years.

3. The Family Guy is unwatchable, imho. |
|
The Simpsons is a way smarter and more subtle.
I tried watching The Family Guy the other night and I couldn't get through 5 minutes.

To quote Otto, "I tried, oh Lord how I did try" to get through an entire ep of 'Family Guy' but I'm out after 5 minutes.

I saw it last Sunday when he walked in on the neighbors wife getting fucked by someone The Fatly Guy didn't know... "this is funny?" i thought to myself. THEN they had the Barbershop Quartet doing the "You Have The AIDS" song... I turned it off. I will NEVER watch the show again- EVER.
Fuck that show.
ps and of course the woman they walked in on was a black woman and she was saying "C'mon baby- put some mo' of dat sugah in my bowl"... shamelessly racist to boot.

4. But the creator of 'Family Guy' himself said |
|
that Peter Griffin is an idiot and does and says dumb things. (he was saying that and other meanderings to justify the Jew episode that never air and that was never funny either.)
It's also Peter who also says the anti-repuke stuff.
Knowing the context from above, I'd have to wonder...

The "When You Wish Upon a Weinstein" did air and it was hilarious.
On edit: Changed from title of musical score "When You Wish Upon a Jew."

He even admitted that on Air America. Also, there was a Kucinich '04 bumper sticker on Brian's car in the first ep this season.

9. Yes, but taking the Simpsons as a whole |
|
Family Guy still has a long way to go. Let's judge it again 10 years from now.
I agree, comparing current seasons FG destroys The Simpsons in the humor/satire/everything department.

In this season the Simpsons has taken on military recruiters, gay marriage, referred to "Iraq War 5: the search for our President's head" and made a satirical joke about torture at Abu Graihb Prison. This season has been great and might be their most political.

sorry folks, but the Simpsons, although still funny, were first passed YEARS ago by Futurama...Family Guy and South Park have put them even further behind (and I say this as an original 'Tracy Ullman Show' watcher)

15. Family Guy, as funny as it is, |
|
is basically just a 22-minute collection of random gags and non sequiturs, with no real plot to speak of.
Comparing it to The Simpsons is apples and oranges. The Simpsons do still manage to do great episodes a few times a season.

|
Better than Family Guy and the Simpsons. I mean come on, Lucille meeting a Michael Moore look alike? George Michael dating a religious fundamentalist? Tobais and his "weapons of mass destruction"?
Come on you cant beat that!

Arrested Development is the best sitcom on television. Everything works on that show even Ron Howard. If I believed in God I'd thank her for getting this show renewed for atleast one more season.
As for Family Guy I used to be a big fan but the repeated viewing of the first three seasons by ex-roommates got me over that show real quick while The Simpsons still holds. Currently The Simpsons absolutely has lost something but the new Family Guy and American Dad are just a bunch of loosely strung together gags. McFarlane and Co. just try to be shocking and politically incorrect on each show and it doesn't work for me.

18. Only if it is stacked against The Simpsons' last seven seasons |
|
Keeping that in mind, The Family Guy is still disposable entertainment; it has neither heart nor soul, and will thus be thrown into the cultural wastebasket in ten years time, while the Looney Tunes and early Disney shorts, AND The Simpsons (Seasons 2-8) will prove to be timeless.

In the last episode I heard Monty Burns say he wanted to change his private prison for the worse and told Smithers he needed "some electrical wire, black hoods and someone who REALLY knows how to point at genitalia!"
No freaking way is a show that makes satire about Abu Graihb torture mainstream and safe. I don't believe you've been watching the new shows if you think that.
