OK, DU Patrick O'Brian Fans....
If the BBC were to do a proper adaptation of the books in the Aubrey/Maturin Series, who would you cast?

In Master and Commander, I can see Colm Meany as James Dillon.

1. After Master and Commander
We've played the casting the movie game for years now.
For the little bit older Aubrey (Hollywood, not BBC) I vote for Jeff Bridges. Maturin would be Tim Roth.

2. An American Playing Aubrey?

You must be out of your mind.

While reading the fourth book, for some reason I see Chris Barrie (aka Arnold J. Rimmer) as Lord Clonfert.

4. It's acting.
We don't have TV so I'm not so good with BBC actors. To your point, lots of Brits and Aussies have pulled off American characters pretty convincingly. In addition I think these stories need full tilt Hollywood production.

3. Colm Meaney is more of a Bonden to me...
Dillon is someone more intense - how about Ioan Gruffudd (the Hornblower guy)? Welsh, Irish, it's all the same, right? :)

5. Meany looks to me about the right age to be Dillon, though.

Gruffudd looks a little young, IMHO

As I said before, Chris Barrie would be a perfect Lord Clonfert for The Mauritius Command
