i'm watching it on "in demand"
i love this movie! i've watched it about five or six times in the past six weeks.
i guess it just fills me with hope about our government and our country and it reassures me that political rebels (who believe in real freedom) aren't bad!

I'm a history buff, and that movie is simply wonderful. It's my favorite musical. :)
I'm sure I'll be watching it several times over 4th of July week.

everything. Once I did see it on a rainy fourth of July holiday on Cape Cod with my two surly stepdaughters, who were teenagers at the time.
That must have been in the late 1970s or early 1980s. We had huge fights about everything, and I locked myself in my bedroom and watched it. It helped me get through that difficult time.
Regrettably, these two women in the 40s have rejected their father and me, even though we've tried to make peace with them now that they have their own families. It is a sad story -- but we still have three children who love both of us, and their five children are also close. Three out of five ain't bad. At least, the two who abandoned us aren't on drugs or in prison or abusing their children. It's just that they don't want us in their lives anymore. After fifteen or more years of pursuing them, it's over. Their natural father handles it better than I do. There's even a book on this subject: "Family Estrangements" by author Barbara LeBey. The book has helped me accept this situation, even though I never envisioned it and did not want it.
Thanks for reading this rant!

ok,. . . maybe not in the right order . . .
I did a scene from it when I was in college back in 72.
I have come to the conclusion that one useless man is a disgrace; two become a law firm; and 3 or more are a congress.
And by God I have had this Congress!
..... Sit down, John!

10. Howard da Silva, cast as Benjamin Franklin, was blacklisted in the 1950s |
|
by McCarthy and Hollywood. The role seemed to be vindication for him sticking to his principles and not naming names. DaSilva (who also starred in Orson Welles' The Cradle Will Rock) is a true American patriot.

11. Get the DVD! Deleted scene you will love! |
|
The long-lost musical number deleted under pressure, it turned out, by the Nixon White House!
"Come ye cool, cool, conservative men The likes of which may never be seen again We have land, cash in hand Self-command, future planned Fortune flies, society survives In neatly ordered lives with well-endowered wives
We sing hosanna, hosanna To our breeding and our banner We are cool.
Come ye cool cool considerate set We'll dance together to the same minuet To the right, ever to the right Never to the left, forever to the right May our creed be never to exceed Regulated speed, no matter what the need."
And it goes on from there. The dance "to the right, ever to the right, never to the left" is hilarious. Nasty attack on the Conservative spirit that nearly choked the nation a-borning.

This is the only musical in my top 10. It should be required in every elementary school in the country. It conveys, a surprisingly accurate feeling of the spirit of the time.

It gave me the chills - especially the end, when they're signing the Declaration of Independence. Awesome. That is my favorite era in history; since the third grade I've had a strange kind of crush on Thomas Jefferson. :loveya: :patriot:

I really liked it. It is a hopeful piece, isn't it.
I was also impressed with the casting--the principal from "Boy Meets World" was fantastic as John Adams, he seemed so earnest and believable. The guy who played Thomas Jefferson was hot, and the governor from "Benson" was great as the guy from Jersey.
I especially liked the little love theme going with John/Abigail Adams.

You just made me feel old. You should have at least recognized William Daniels from "St. Elsewhere" or "Knight Rider" if not his film work!
And have you seen "Crossing Jordan?" That fat, white haired guy who plays Jordan Cavanaugh's father is what Thomas Jefferson turned into.
And Abigail Adams is now Will Truman's mother. :)

His voice was really familiar, but I couldn't place it. I was a little kid when St. Elsewhere was on (well, and Knight Rider too)--have no memory of the show whatsoever. I did catch Knight Rider from time to time...the thing I remember most about it, though, was when David Hasselhoff was on Diff'rent Strokes!
THAT'S Thomas Jefferson? Aww, LOL.

Your son, the Royal Governor of New Jersey has been placed under arrest and has been taken to a safe location in Connecticut."
"Is he unharmed, sir?"
"When last I heard, yes."
"Well, then why the long face? I hear Connecticut is an excellent location. Tell me, why did they arrest the little bastard?"
I love that line, and Franklin zipping off to New Brunswick for the whoring and the drinking." :7

The teachers thought it would be a good way to teach us about the Revolution.
They weren't expecting the sexual aspects of the movie, though (I remember hearing teachers say). All of us hot-blooded pre-teens loved those parts, though.
