I've only been using it for about 15 years. My old one was Helvetica, but they're so damned similar. Should I ditch the sans serif look for a while?

4. Helvetica = sexiest font ever
Hands down.

If you're sick of sans serif, try Times New Roman maybe?

25. Remind me never to look at your porn collection
Helvetica is about as sexy as a tub of axle grease--which is to say Not At All.

You use Helvetica because it's easy to read and because you can print it on some really shitty equipment without fucking it up.

If I had to pick one font (my full list is downthread), and it HAD to be on a Windows box as it comes from the factory, I'd use Century Schoolbook. That's a good meat-and-potatoes font.

30. It's also boring as all get out
If I am setting a parts catalog with page after page of charts, and there are so many parts I have to go to 6-point type, a good sans is always a good way to go. My fallback sans: Frutiger. Clean, easy to read and it isn't common enough that people are bored with it.

But if setting something you're going to read (as opposed to "refer to" like a parts catalog), serifs are always better.

Two fonts I have a love-hate relationship with are Friz Quadrata and Optima. They're wonderful fonts. They're also so easy to distort that you need to go to film to get them to look right--your laser printer won't do them justice.

It's got a bit more character, but is still a sans serif font.

My rule: Sans serif online -- serif offline.

13. Wow - thanks a million!!!
I've been doing this so damned long that my "Font Freak" nature has been repressed for some time. I can't wait to hunt some of these down and try them!

The last font I got excited about was 'Snipple', so that tells you how long it's been.

God, I hate that font with a passion! Of course, I'm using it right now to type this, given it is the message entry font on DU!

I'll be interested to see what suggestions you get. I do tend to use arial because it is so readable. Sans Serif might be a good alternative.

23. Comic Sans sucks rocks!
I have considered finding the guy who created Comic Sans, the most trite font created in the last 500 years, and drowning him. I hate that fucking font.

A font set containing Adobe Caslon, Adobe Garamond, Cochin, Baskerville, Veljovic, Antique Olive, Franklin Gothic, Frutiger, Gill Sans, Univers, Tekton, Commercial Script, Shelley Script, Linotext, Universal Pi and Zapf Dingbats will handle just about anyone's needs. Throw in your corporate font if it's not on that list and you'll be set for life.

Note what's not on there: No Times. No Helvetica or Arial. No Comic Sans. These fonts have been used so much in the last twenty years, we've worn them out.

20. I'm a font freak and I beg you not to use Times, please...
I'm currently putting all my creative writing in Tw Cen MT but I have to convert it to boring old Arial or Times to share it with my writing group. I've seen it under other names like Two Cent also. I've also enjoyed using Saturday Sans, Century Gothic, Tahoma and Trebuchet, depending on the purpose of the document.

If you prefer serif fonts, I use California FB for my newsletter. It's very readable and has a bit of style. But anything in the Dutch 801 family is good and I like QuintessenceSSK, but it might be a little showy for everyday use. My fall back is AGaramond or Garamond. Makes me think of olden days as does Bookman Old Style.

Have fun with it, I say.
