The flag has its own day, but not the Constitution
Which points to the fundamental flaw in American character: valuing symbols over substance. I would bet a pound of ZombyCoffee that 99% of the flag-flying fetishists out there couldn't name 5 amendments beyond the 2nd. Or understand the basic importance of the 14th amendment, or the difference between the 9th and 10th amendments.

Is it any wonder the Patriot Act and other subversions of our once-cherished liberties are imperiled?

Happy Flag Day.

(oh, and the Betsy Ross story is pure hearsay, first concocted by her grandson, without any proof)

1. Probably one key difference
It's hard to pin down a day we should celebrate the Constitution. Which day do you use? The day it was agreed upon in principle? The day Delaware became the first state to ratify it? The day the last of the 13 colonies ratified it?

Flag day is easier.

3. I opt for ratification
It's simple enough: It was ratified, therefore became the law of the land and established the republic as we (knew) it. It was ratified June 21, 1788 when New Hampshire became the 9th out of 13 states needed (2/3 majority) for ratification.

Americans love symbols and being told to feel good about themselves. They hate lectures and history. It gets in the way of all that feel-goodism.

8. No arguments here.
Just saying that's probably the stumbling block. Because you just know someone will moan.

2. Citizenship Day - Sept. 17, birthday of the Constitution.
Edited on Tue Jun-14-05 02:26 PM by blm
BushInc tried to steal Sept.17 for the pledge of allegiance, completely ignoring the Constitution and its significance.

5. The drafting you mention should be commemorated
But I opted for ratification (June 21, 1788), because that is when it became the living document.

4. That flag manufacturer's lobby must have been mighty strong...
sure flag day has the flags, but what about the drinking? Can't it be a drinking holiday like St. Patrick's day, Cinquo de Mayo, or Easter?
