How dangerous do you think downtown Detroit is?
You're probably wrong. Your city is probably more dangerous. Most are, according to this new study:

~snip~
A study released on Tuesday revealed that the probability of becoming a crime victim in downtown Detroit may be lower than what its potential visitors believe it to be, Local 4 reported.

The study, titled "Reality vs. Perceptions: An Analysis of Crime and Safety in Downtown Detroit," was released by the Tourism Economic Development Council and prepared by Wayne State University's Michigan Metropolitan Information Center.

Results of the study showed that Detroit's rate of serious crime is 26 percent below the national average, according to a news release from the TEDC.

2. Yeah, just make sure you don't leave downtown.
Uh, sounds like most other war-zone cities in America (Baltimore is the one I know the best). If you can see the Hard Rock Cafe, Marriott, or Starbucks from where you're standing, you're safe and comfy inside the yuppie tourist zone.

6. As if . . .
. . . we expected the Michigan tourism agency to start a "Come to Detroit and get robbed and murdered" campaign?

B-)

4. 18 years of living on 8 mile , and no worries. 1st day in rogers park,
chicago at Loyola and I was caught in the middle of a firefight at what used to be Checkers' burger joint on the corner of broadway and devon. I've been robbed in front of Cuneen's on Devon, at the Howard stop, in front of guitar center when it used to be on clark. The worst was at a Mr. Blotto show---my friend was cut in the leg in the bar and had his wallet taken while he lay on the ground.

In detroit, you can avoid trouble. In Chicago, you can't.

5. "Detroit. Where the weak are killed and eaten"
(A t-shirt i have seen)

Also this one;
"I'm so bad, i vacation in Detroit"

Another from those days which was also a billboard along I75 south of downtown;
"Go Tigers!! And take the Lions with you!"

I lived in the Detroit area from 89 through 2000 though never within the city limits, but at one residence, one of my first, literally right across the street from the city line. I never had a problem there and spent lots of time downtown.

There are "Bad" neighborhoods in every city and it is a simple fact that if you go somewhere you know you might not be welcome (Because of skin color, for instance) you might just come across some trouble. But the fact is, most people respond to respect and decency and if you are respectful and decent, you'll get along most anywhere.
