How much SHOULD cell phones cost? |
|
If there is anyone at DU that knows a good deal about cell phone tech I am wondering how much cell phones could cost and the provider still make a profit?
Am I right in thinking the service is ridiculously overpriced, big providers are keeping down anyone that wants to compete, and they are laughing all the way to the bank? Somehow I have a feeling they could offer $20/month unlimited and still turn a profit.
The minute game they play is truly ridiculous. It reminds me back when every minute you were on the net would cost you 10 cents.

1. You're not separating out the costs |
|
of the various elements:
1. The phones 2. The network construction 3. Network maintenance and operation 4. Administrative overhead
And of course there are the cosideration of peak versus off-peak usage which is why they tend to separate out rates and allowances for the business day versus non-business hours.
Since many phones are bundled with the service, that cost is frequently amortized for the buyer.
And prices don't necessarily closely reflect costs. They reflect competition requirements, usage patterns, coverage areas, market segmentation, technologies, etc.

2. Cell phone service should be free |
|
it goes over the air like radio and should be free like radio. The people own the air waves.
