1. The principles enshrined in it were considered

to be the traditional liberties of the English people - it was because they were being infringed by King John that the document was needed. If you want another similarity, King John (as with most nobility and royalty of the time) was essentially illiterate (he might have managed 'my pet goat' though) and so could not read the document himself.
