3. Oh, the American Cocker Spaniel looks just like my dog Spice --

Regrettably, she bounded out after a snowstorm in Massachusetts and didn't see the four-wheel drive vehicle coming down the disguised street. The driver tried to avoid her, but he killed her. She was only four years old. That was in 1988 -- RIP "Sweet Spice of Alpen Knoll" -- We loved you so much we could never replace you. I have GREAT BIG TEARS in my eyes!

I know, I know how it is to suddenly lose a beloved, dear, sweet baby.
When I was a little kid we had a cocker that looked like this, same color too, and her name was Lady.

6. Thanks, folks -- of all the dogs I've had, Spice was the sweetest --

Bambi, a Boston Terrier -- hit by a telephone repairman's truck -- age approximately 4 years. I was almost into puberty and I remember the afternoon like it was yesterday. The telephone man apologized and put the dog's body into a cardboard box in our carport in Florida. I cried like a baby. Dad took me out to a couple's home -- I still remember the man's name was Alfred Schindler and we purchased a girl puppy for $50 -- that was:

Dolly, "Duchess of Dade" a purebred but pet-type Boston Terrier and I took her to an obedience degree CD for companion dog. She was bred to one of the truly amazing champions of the breed, Ch. Regardless, and gave birth to seven male puppies by free-whelping them (no Caesarian needed). We made it into the Boston Terrier book in the 50s. Her son "Dark Dancer Regardless" won a puppy match and I handled him. Had to put Dolly down at age 12 because of advancing breast cancer after surgery.

Buffy "Sunshine Haze of Kimra" another buff purebred American Cocker Spaniel -- my first "baby" -- purchased from a pet shop on Lexington Avenue and lived with us in a NYC apartment in the 1960s. Later, when I was divorced and remarried, Buffy came with me to Massachusetts and lived in a big colonial home with a backyard swimming pool and our five kids. I felt very guilty because I had not given her heartworm medicine during the time my first marriage was breaking up, and she developed the disease. The treatment cured her, but left her with a weakened heart. Just a couple of months before she died, I took her to the vet and he listened to her heart with a stethescope. I still recall he said her heart sounded like a "machine shop." Buffy died right in front of our home one summer night when she was 14 years old. She let out a big yelp and just keeled over dead.

My husband buried both Spaniels buried in front of our old home on Willis Road. We nailed Spice's collar and name tag to a huge old pine tree there.
