A personal dilemma....kinda...
I just recieved a lead on a job at a design firm. They are looking for someone with more personal apperance than personal skills. I know it is one of those vapid boutique rich daddy giving the vapid kid a job type situations, and i happen to have personal apperance and personal skills. Now the inner-feminist is wanting to take back my resume because the job should be decided on merit. Is it horrible if I am hired primarily on looks? I am afraid that I would feel like a hooker, lol. If they pay enough to keep me in Manolos and Calvin Klein, I would not mind. It is just the fact that they didn't even hide the fact that they were hiring based on looks.

I swear that there was an Ally McBeal episode with this plot.

1. In this job market
I say take it.

Then if you feel guilty use some of the money from your regular paychecks to help advance the cause of social justice.

2. Aren't people always hiring based on looks?
I mean, we had a DUer here a while ago who was saying she felt she wasn't hired because of her weight.

If someone looks well-kept, neat, and professional, in some industries that will win over someone who looks like a slob, even if the slob is smarter and more qualified.

At least this job isn't wasting anyone's time by going through the pretense of "we want who's best qualified".

4. Take the job, and do it well.
You have the skills they want, not just the looks. Now, if you were planning to file your nails all day, some folks might have a problem with it, but you can probably kick their asses and look good doing it.

Go for it!

5. It was just a lead...I haven't been formally offered the job.
You are right. I am so uncomfortable with the idea of being judged by my looks. It is the first thing people see and they treat me differently based on it. Attractive or Otherwise, it is always an elephant in the room. I would not say I am a bra-burner, but I am what I would consider to be a modern feminist. I wear skirts and pointy shoes, dye my hair and get my nails done, but that is my personal choice. I am not vain, in fact that is not a trait that I find attractive in anyone. Could I work for someone so vain that they actually request someone who is goodlooking from the start?

Also, Mojambo is right...I can donate money to feel less guilty to social justice organizations:).

11. Maybe this will help.
One of the women who works for my husband's small company is probably one of the most gorgeous women I've ever met.

She also does an amazing job.

She has the respect of everyone who works with her.

Plus, she is hysterical and great to hang out with.

7. LOL
A headshot for DU or the resume? LOL. I will upload a pic here sometime. I hate having them taken and I usually duck under the table. I have flash-phobia:P.

8. a job is a job
if you need it and can get it, probably take it.

On a different note; if the company is appearance oriented, they might also be a place that would lean toward, rather than away from sexual harrassment, so if true, that could make it a very uncomfortable place to work. I guess I would say if you get an interview, ask about their sexual harrassment policies at the interview, and ask to see what their written policies are.

Best wishes whatever you decide.

:hi:

9. True. Great tip.
But I am the type of person that if anyone were to ever say or do anything inappropriate, they would be in traction. Screw Policy.:P

10. When we are younger we get our jobs based on looks
You will have plenty of years to get a job based on merit. Take the job and use them as experience.
