17. Well everyone associates Kangaroos with Australia though
Sort of like the Bald Eagle and America, the Bald Eagle's not on the flag but everyone associates it with the United States.

4. from some sports message board...
Green and Gold were proclaimed to be Australia's national colors by the Governor-General in April of 1984. Before the proclamation was delivered, Australia had no "official" colors. That said, three color combinations had traditionally been claimed to be Australia's national colors: Red, White and Blue... Blue and Gold... and Green and Gold.

* Red, White and Blue were featured in the first Coat of Arms of the Commonwealth of Australia in 1908. They are also the colors of the Australian flag.

* Blue and Gold are the colors of the crest in the Commonwealth Coat of Arms that was adopted in 1912.

* Green and Gold have popularly been accepted as the traditional colors in Australian and international sporting events since 1899. The Australian cricket team that toured England in that year adopted colors of "Gum" (Green) and "Wattle" (Gold). The team wore blazers, caps and jumpers featuring the colors. The Australian Rugby League Board of Control made a switch to Green and Gold jerseys for international test matches in time for a 1928 visit by the English Lions.

5. here's a better. more reliable source with more info

True Colours Shine

excerpt>

The newly formed ARL Board of Control made the decision to change to green and gold after the 1924 visit by the Lions. The Board's minutes don't record why the change to green and gold was made - and the decision was not universally supported with letters to Sydney newspapers chiding the move away from blue.

The Board resolved: "It was decided that future Australian teams wear the recognised jerseys of green and gold (gold stripe to be narrow), white knickers, green and gold top hose, and the badge to be the Australian Coat of Arms."

6. In homage to the Oregon Ducks?
because the Ducks remind them of their national symbol the Duck-billed Platypus?

(Are there ducks in Australia?)

13. well I'd have to agree about that...
If you were, say, invincible, like, say, Superman, then you could get away with wearing any costume you want, but when you're a football team that goes 5-6 then such adornment would naturally attract the heartiest hoots of derision!
