seriously, at least when POGS were cool we didn't have to watch that shit on 30 different channels.

It is amazingly fun to play.

But it's not like it soaks the TV schedule like certain things (reality TV anyone?) It's really only on like 3 or 4 channels.
Personally I find it extremely compelling to watch.

12. It does soak the schedule though. |
|
It crowds out other stuff on the 24 hour sports channels, and these channels are the only ones that provide quality programming with any regularity. At least this is the case in Canada where it seems that at any given time at least one of the 3 sports networks is broadcasting poker. Part of the allure of a sports network is the goofy shit they air during off hours (e.g. wheelchair Australian rules football, U.S. miniature golf championship, round table discussions of steroid abuse in professional bowling). In the last couple of years, this diversity of programming has been vanishing with the networks filling the deadspace with yet another poker tournament.
I enjoy watching it every now and then, but good grief, it's like these channels have become the Texas Hold 'Em Network.

35. Well, if pushing miniature golf and bowling analysis off the air |
|
counts as soaking the TV schedule then I guess you'd be right.
That these poker tournaments get better ratings than the goofy shit they air during off hours doesn't surprise me. That's how TV works I guess.
I can sympathize though. I wish American Idol wasn't on so much, but people like it and watch it so I guess I'm out of luck.

I play in online tournements very often and I can say I am good at it :)
You have to play very conservative the first 30 minutes, have to figure out the way the other people play. Then you have to play wisely till 80% of the competitors drop out. Then you can start thinking of winning the tourney :)

i live within driving distance of both atlantic city and the connecticut casinos, so i like to play cash games when i can. i'm happy about the explosion of poker, quite honestly. nothing better than sitting down at the borgata with a bunch of cocky frat boys who learned to play by watching poker on tv and taking their beer money.
i enjoy nl hold 'em but pot limit omaha (hi) is great too. not too many poker rooms spread omaha though.
totally agree about tourney strategy...play tight early and protect your chips, let the crazies knock each other out. pick up pots here and there so you're not short-stacked when you get to the fourth or fifth level when you can start playing more aggressively.

17. I play weekly with neighbors. Sure beats watchin TV all night. |
|
I love it. We all started playing at the same time and we're all pretty good. We bought a table top and chips. The winner usually takes home about $70, which is always nice. The losers are only out $10. We play in a single table tournament style. Winner takes all.

I built my own octogonal poker table downstairs. All oak, cork cupholders, black felt. Looks nice and it's fun to play on. Got some nice chips and we're in business. We play for 10 or 20 bucks, either winner takes all or simple cash out. WAY better than sitting around doing nothing all night. And at the most, you only out 20 bucks. We rotate houses.
