Any Southern Liberal Jews
http://www.politics1.com/

"LIBERAL (SOUTHERN) JEWS!" If you're Jewish, hold either center-left or liberal political views, are generally active or well-connected in your community (Jewish community, political community, business community, etc), and you live in Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, Tennessee, North or Central Florida, South Carolina or North Carolina, I want to hear from you. Please drop me an email if you'd possibly be interested in serving on the US Regional Board of Directors of a prominent, well-established, non-partisan, progressive Jewish organization (and please write "AJC" in the subject line). Thanks!!

2. Since when is Virginia not the South?
I have a friend who would be a perfect candidate for this, but she lives in Virginia.

4. Technically Virginia is southern,
Edited on Thu Jun-16-05 11:08 AM by Shell Beau
but no one in the south considers it southern. I don't. I consider Arkansas, Tennessee, Mississippi, Alabama, Some of Missouri, Georgia and South Carolina southern. That is all. Virginia is not truly southern for us in the deep south and we don't consider it southern at all.

On edit Louisiana is also considered southern.

6. Not Louisiana or the Florida panhandle?
I knew there was some disagreement about what is a southern state. I've always thought of Va as part of the south but I'm not a southerner.

8. I didn't mean to leave off Louisiana. It is southern. But most of us
Edited on Thu Jun-16-05 11:06 AM by Shell Beau
in the deep south do not consider Florida to be southern. Obviously it is southern in location, but it is not considered southern by the deep south. And the rest like Virginia and West Virginia, they are by no means considered southern.

12. I knew most of Florida
was considered to be the northern most southern state in the country. Cool. I learn something new everyday here.

btw, I've got a nephew going to MSU down in your parts. Looks like he may have lost his heart to a southern belle. :)

13. You know they
say the south produces the most beautiful women. I'm just saying that is what "they" say. I hope he enjoys MSU. A lot of my friends went there and liked it. It is located in a smaller town, but the students always find something to get into.

15. The good ole southern soul food
is the best, but it also can add lots and lots of pounds if you don't eat it in moderation. Everything down here is fried. At the state fair last year they had fried Snickers, fried Twinkies, fried Oreos. You name it, they fry it.

16. Yes it's similar here.
Fried everything. I've fallen in love with Cajun and Creole but it's hard to get any of that type of cooking up here. Oh to find a woman who could cook Redfish. I'd be in heaven. The fried Twinkies I can do without.

17. Good cajun is a must!
I love spicy food like that. I've had it in New Orleans and here in Mississippi. Along the coast tends to be best. When crawfish season starts up around here, people get really excited.

19. The northern part of Florida is considered southern, like Jacksonville
But down here in South Florida, we're mostly considered northern because it was northerners who developed Palm Beach, Ft. Lauderdale and Miami.

During the Civil War, there was nothing down here but a handful of people who either supported the confederacy or the union. It was pretty split.

The saying in Miami is that the further north you drive, the deeper south you get.

20. Isn't that funny!!
Still most people I know do not consider Florida to be southern. It is strange b/c it is the southern most state! But like you said, it goes back to the civil war.

21. Yes, Florida was under Spanish rule until 1821.
Many slaves who ran away ended up down here because they were allowed to live free. Also, many hundreds of Creek Indians from Georgia and Alabama came down to Florida to avoid being relocated to Oklahoma. They became the Seminoles, which comes from the Spanish word "Cimaron" which means "wild" and "unruly".

When Spain ceded Florida to the US in 1821, then Andrew Jackson decided to wipe out the Indians, who fought back in three wars called the "Seminole Wars". Runaway slaves who fought by their side were called the "Black Seminoles".

Florida did not become a state until 1845, then it seceded from the union in 1861. It didn't really have time to form itself as a slave state.

11. New Orleans is considered to stand on its own.
It is different than anywhere else. It is more Cajun than southern. I am not talking actual locale. By the way, I love New Orleans. I have been several times and have always had a blast!!!!
