8. I'm Now Three Years SMOKE FREE!!
Smoked for 25 years... when I stopped, I was smoking TEN packs a week. Not an easy thing to do, but I'm glad I did. The nicotine patches helped a lot.

11. Occasional cigar or pipe
Maybe 2 or 3 times a week I'll have one cigar or two pipe bowls. I love the taste of a good cigar or pipe tobacco. I've tried cigarettes but I've never been able to get into them. I also can stay away from nicotine for months without having any withdrawals at all. I don't know why, but I cannot get heavily addicted to smoking, even if I try.

20. It's because of WHAT you're smoking
All tobacco has nicotine.

Cigar/pipe tobacco nicotine is alkaline and is absorbed through the mouth. You could probably get addicted to alkaline nicotine, but most people don't.

Cigarette tobacco nicotine is acidic, and it's more addictive than crack.

22. yes but I am cutting back.
I am taking one cigarette out of each pack for the first week, 2 for the second and so one. Eventually, I will be down to nothing and it will be gradual enough that I will not notice it.

23. I second hand smoked for the first 16 years of my life....
Both my parents smoked-my dad smoked cigars and a pipe, and my mother smoked cigarettes. I remember being trapped in the back seat of the car choking while those two would puff away. It would make me sick to my stomach. To this day I cannot STAND tobacco smoke. I hate hate HATE it. The slightest whiff of it makes me nauseous-literally.

26. I used to smoke like a fucking chimney. Started in college.
Edited on Thu Jun-16-05 04:36 PM by swag
Back in the day, I'd sit at my desk as a phone geek at Metro Messenger and go through a couple of packs of Viceroys each day. It's funny to think that you used to be able to smoke in offices and even in college classrooms. Some of my classes and offices, we'd have a huge cloud going all day. Those poor non-smokers.

Had to quit because it was killing me. It took several times for me to kick completely, but I finally did it, and have been off for years. I don't care if other people smoke around me. It's not a temptation any more.

The American Lung Association used to have these books: "Freedom From Smoking in 21 Days" or something like that. I ran through that whole course a few times. I think they still have those kits in one form or another. Last time I bought a couple for friends, I called my state lung association to purchase them.

Anyway, it has been years.

34. My dad's throat cancer and bladder cancer serve as a good deterrant.
Sorry smokers, but I have to be honest here. If my dad hadn't been a lifelong smoker the odds of his developing these two cancers would have been astronomically lower. I hate the bloody things and wish tobacco had never been cultivated as a recreational smoking product. Nice plant, but leave it in the ground.

36. Yeah a pack and a half a day.
I smoke most of them but a few get burned down in the ashtray while I peruse the internet or play video games or whatever. I'm not ready to quit yet but when I am I'm sure I'll have no problem walking away from them. I have strong willpower when I decide to apply it.

37. I don't know-it depends on your terms
I had a pack an 1/2 a day habit for 15 years that I quit 4 years ago last February. However, I do still smoke a pipe or cigar occasionally, and I have a hookah that I smoke maybe once a week.
So, I guess that's no, but some people would still say yes.
