Am I the only one here who is NOT a cat person? |
|
Fine, bring on the flames. I really don't care. But I am Soooo not a cat person. Hell would be a bed on which I was forced to sleep with cats. Or an eternity of changing litter boxes. I do not want to live with them and I keep my distance at friends' houses who have them. I certainly would never go so far as to advocate extinction, but I'm perfectly happy to keep them at a distance.

8. Seconded - I like them okay but I wouldn't want to live with them |
|
Nothing smells worse than the stuff that emits from the orifices at the back end of a cat, and the hair everywhere would get annoying quite quick. An outdoors cat might be okay... of course where I live that would be either an alley or a busy four lane street.

I'm just not a pet person in general. It's all I can do to keep up with the crap that comes out of my kids. And hey, they don't shed on the sofa. Yet.

Vermin of the first order. I would be happy to see cat parts spread around rather than lizards, baby birds, and mice.

15. I think everyone has a right to their opinion |
|
about cats and mostly just about everything. However, there are so many of us who are SO much cat people that sometimes it appears like everyone here is, and unfortunately those who don't like them don't seem to have much of a choice in respect to their own likes and dislikes.
The only thing I would suggest to those who don't are to at least not hate cats--or animals in particular--to the point where your antipathy makes it look like you are somehow in the position of passionately hating them. One of the requirements of being a liberal is to empathize and to show compassion for those who are smaller or more vulnerable than ourselves. It's okay not to like something, but instead of protesting or in some way taking umbrage at those of us who really DO love them, just ignore the cat threads completely. That way, you can gleefully enjoy a cat-free environment while maintaining your objectivity in cat matters. :)

17. I've had to live with the cats in the past. |
|
My mom was a cat person as was my husband when we first married. I have no problem giving advice since I've had experience. I also don't mind cat threads. Whatever. Different things interest different people. I just noticed a plethora of cat threads and wondered if I was the only person who consciously chose not to associate with them.
I'll pet a cat if it lives with someone else, but I'm not taking it into my home. I'm not seeking a 100% cat free environment, just curious about other posters' preferences.

but I sure don't like them. From what I've seen so far, I can tell that there are a lot of cat lovers here on DU. Maybe they're just more vocal than us dog folks?

23. Every cat hater is a cat lover waiting to be discovered. |
|
I was like you----until I rescued my kitten. Now I'm a cat lover...something I swore that I would never be. I even used to tell dead-cat jokes. (You know, 101 uses for a dead cat.)
I have been rehabilitated. All it took was holding that little tiny furball in my hands the first time.

25. I like other people's pets... |
|
Good to visit friends with pets and play with them and pet them and such, and then leave them when it's time to go. I could never make it so I'm home every day spot on time to let a dog out, and I don't spend enough time at home to warrant having a pet of my own, dog or cat really. Plus, I like not having to clean up after them, not having hair shed all over the place, and not having my precious heirlooms chewed to bits.
I'm pretty much the same way about kids... other people's in small doses can be fun, but that's about where my interest ends.

I've known so many people who said they hate cats, then by chance they fall in love with a cat, and a new Cat Person is born.

38. They are drawn to you because your body language says "not a threat"... |
|
Seriously. It's not uncommon for the person in the room who's not the biggest cat-fancier to wind up being pestered by them.
This is because he/she is most likely ignoring the cat, which, to the cat, looks kinda inviting -- no direct eye contact, no poking/prodding hands, no baby talk, etc. ("At last, a *sane* human!")
Regardless, consider it a compliment from these rather complex and very choosy creatures!

The only word I'd like to associate with cats is extinct. They should be airlifted to the highest cloud and enjoy a group freefall over the Pacific. On the way down they'll prove as self-absorbed and worthless as ever. I volunteer to sweep up, assuming sharks and other sea life astutely share my distaste for them.
