Any good movies out this weekend?
I'm highly skeptical of the new Batman movie. I keep hearing (overblown, IMO) hype about how "they finally got it right" and how "dark and moody" it is. I'm not an angst-ridden teenager any more, I'm pretty sick and tired of summer action movies with the same tired car chases and explosions where the costumed superhero always saves the damsel in distress at the end. And what do they mean by "finally got it right?" There is no "right" for Batman. There's been too many incarnations of the fairly two-dimensional character over the years.

If I wanted to pay eight bucks for a Batman movie it had better be entertaining. I want a modern batman movie with homoerotic tension between the superhero and his twinky side-kick, villains who are either flaming homosexuals (a la "The Scoutmaster") or the hot, hot, hot Eartha Kitt; and are always inexplicably thirty degrees. I want a drunk Irish police chief, a mayor with a girl-next-door daughter, and scenes where Batman and Robin are walking sideways up a building.

Anywho, that's it for Batman.

My local indie theater's playing a British movie called Nillions, it looks sort of sappy. Is it any good?

1. See "Revenge of the Sith" again. It gets better each time.
Look for details like the Millennium Falcon. It's in the show.

2. I haven't seen it yet.
Awfully skeptical about that one too.

I can remember sitting through the second half of Attack of the Clones pondering if I'd bother to see the next one.

18. Yeah, see it, I've seen it like 4 times....
I LOVE IT!!!! But, that's because for some reason I get a real kick rooting for Palpatine....I Love that Creep...He is such a evil genius. I went a couple of days ago with my Mom, who has no clue of anything Star Wars, except for the names of the Jedis and she was asking all kinds of questions in the beginning. And she was making all kinds of side comments, like when during the Yoda/ Palpatine fight, she kept on saying "Poor little Yoda".

3. Batman Begins
I've heard it's the best Batman yet. Although after the last two, that's not really saying that much.

Really, we should be requiring mandatory viewings of the last Batman movie for all Arnold Schwarzenegger supporters.

4. My Suggestion: Howl's Moving Castle
If you're ever seen a Miyazaki, you'll know what to expect. If not, it's like nothing you've ever seen. Just be prepared for complexity, whimsy, and constant surprises.

There is more magic and imagination in two minutes of Howl than in two hours of most movies. This one has the added benefit of being proudly anti-war.

6. I've been waiting for it!
I hope to go see Howl's Moving Castle this weekend. I've been a Miyazaki fan since I saw Princess Mononoke many years ago.

16. I Saw it in Bethesda Maryland on Tuesday
Don't know how it's being rolled out everywhere. One site said June 10, another said June 17. In any case, for me it was a must-see.

19. I loved it
Better than Spirited Away, IMO, a lot more WOW moments. And a pretty decent message. I don't like some of the anime conventions (the way the hero and heroine are always drawn, they just look vacant), but the rest is great. Turniphead is a great character.

7. Agreed - the campy version (Adam West) are the best, followed by...
"Batman Forever" because it's the same style, plus a budget.

8. But it wasn't the same style.
It was more like a cynical unholy mix of Burton and Adam West.

12. I want to see "Mysterious Skin"
It's not a new film. It came out last week. But I read the book and liked it a lot. Gregg Araki directs, with Joseph-Gordon Levitt as one of the stars. It's gotten very good reviews.

17. This Batman is totally different than all other Batman movies/TV
Edited on Sat Jun-18-05 02:34 PM by Hippo_Tron
And I mean TOTALLY different. Batman isn't even mentioned until the second half of the movie. But it has its fair share of car chases and explosions, so if you are really not up for that, then that is the only reason that I would say not to go. Otherwise, it has an incredibly well written story, some great acting (Liam Neeson is pretty incredible), and in my opinion some great political undertone.
