Follow the sidewalk to the big culvert. I don't know what it's called exactly, I think it's supposed to be the Las Angeles river (?), from the big chase scene in Terminator 2. You know what I mean.
Anyway, head left, under the bridge there's body armor. It's really convenient.
Don't feel you need to go on mission right away. Drive around, explore the neighborhood, get comfortable with a map.
There's an AR-15 at the west end of the airport. One of the best weapons in the game. I usually get it early then build up my skills with it.

Apparently, you can use your own mp3's (or wav's) in the PC version so you can customize the radio to your particular tastes.
However, I would hold off on doing so for a while. The soundtrack for that game is absolutely amazing. I heard a lot of old faves that I hadn't heard in years and discovered a lot of really good new music that I had never heard of before.
