What are you guys/gals listening to tonight????
Edited on Sat Jun-18-05 12:34 AM by aquaman
I have been listening to Air America for hours but recently switched to some tunes. Presently listening to 16 Horsepower "Sackcloth 'n' Ashes." About to put on some old Neil Young and then some Iron and Wine and then Slayer.

1. Billy Bragg and Wilco . . .
"Mermaid Avenue, Vol I" CD. I recommend it highly. All the songs are based on lyrics and poetry by Woody Guthrie.

7. If you ever get a chance . . .
pick up Billy Bragg's CD titled "The International." It's sort of a collection of protest songs. Also brilliant.

3. Soft classical music -- KBPS, Portland, OR while getting ready for
the arrival of my son, daughter-in-law and two grandkids, ages 5 and 7, on Sunday.

I know it will be very hectic and noisy around here for the next several days.

It's like "the calm before the storm" because I'm kind of stressed out. I'm not the greatest hostess in the world, and the weather isn't looking too good for outdoor activities.

Whatever...

14. Wow, finally,
someone that actually knows who this band is or shall I say was since they recently broke up. I do like all of their songs, quite obsessed I am and have been for years.. Drove eight hours to see them on their last tour of the US. Intensive to say the least. PM me your address and I will burn you a copy of every cd that they have ever put out, if you don't have them of course.

Then I was talking to a neighbor, a mix of Stevie Wonder, Smoky Robinson, Sly and the Family Stone, etc. Then we shifted to Deep Purple. And just now a Ronnie Montrose CD that my neighbor burned for me.

34. Since you like Kraftwerk...
Check out this project a friend of mine is working on. http://receptorsmusic.com/

The main page is his various bands both past and present but he's putting out a Kraftwerk tribute album by various artists all done with 8 bit equipment. Things like Ataris and Gameboys, really cool stuff. Poke around his website he has mp3s and video downloads I'm sure you'll like some of it.

A photo I took at a recent show.

Wasn't she a Playboy playmate at one time? I always thought she was hot; not that it has anything to do with her music. ;)

Edit: Stupid grammar errors.

26. I only listen to...
I only ever listen to a Ukranian death metal band called "Urd" that's only available on 78-RPM vinyl, smuggled out of the Ukraine on the inside of hand-crafted coffins made from the last few Black Forest birdseye maple trees. It's like totally impossible to find, which is what makes it so cool... I paid $640 for their latest album, but I don't actually have a Ukranian 78-RPM player, but that's OK because it's like, Urd.

31. Dimmu Borgir? They are like SO American Idol...
They totally sold out with "Death Cult Armageddon" -- sounds like a fucking Britney Fox album. The only reason I know them at ALL is because my grandmother listens to it while she does her knitting.

Urd... and Urd alone, man. Seek it out, if you dare...

30. Advance copy of the New Pornographers album, Twin Cinema
It's pretty damn good.

It doesn't have the instant greatness feel of Electric Version and it might not have the long term appeal of Mass Romantic, but it is a fabulous Pop album.

37. Robert Carver/Carvor Mass 'Dum Sacrum Myterium' for 10 voices
It's great when they can't decide how to spell a composers name, oh and they don't know when he was born or died either (1484/5 - some point after 1568).

He's a little known Scottish composer, the only other Scottish composer I can think of is the still living James Macmillan.

The music really is at the height of complex renaissance polyphony, before the Council of Trent told them to calm down as wee bit.

The C.D. also has his motets "O Bone Jesu" (19 voices), and "Gaude Flore Virginali" (5 voices).
