That's the purpose of that organization. I actually met a Gideon once on a bus. I admire that kind of evangelism.

26. Would you rather they did that... |
|
Just put a Bible in an hotel room, and left it there. No compulsion to read it, not even a suggestion to read it. Or that they knocked on your door, and started pestering you.
Whether one agrees with Gideons and indeed Christianity or not, I can think of few less offensive things that they could do.
What's more if the Muslims want to start leaving translations of the Qur'an in rooms, I'd be delighted; ditto any other religion.
The Gideons actually did this in my school as well; they gave a free copy of the New Testament and Psalms to every pupil who wanted one. They came back every year and repeated it with the new 2nd Form (the youngest year group).
The big point is no compulsion.

With a purple light you can see certain stains that I just don't want to see.

just as I don't have to turn on the TV, or raid the mini-bar, etc. I'm sort of indifferent to it.

8. Well I'm in a nice B & B.... |
|
...and from the sound of it, the folks across the hall are NOT reading the bible. Had to leave the room and go out on the porch.
Should I go back up there, knock on their door, and tell them it's Bible Study time?
I'll do anything you suggest coloradodem2005.

16. Damn, that was a great plan. There is a glass transom above their
|
|
door and it's dark (light was on when I left) and quiet. I don't know, it might be pushing it. I wish I hit this thread a little earlier. We all eat breakfast at the same time. Maybe I'll sit with them or ask them if there was some "mechanical" problem in their room.
Thanks for the suggestion:hi:

I don't think "nice" is right, maybe "intense," or "passionate." At breakfast, maybe I'll say, "wow, that sounded like FUN last night!"

Christians are commanded by Christ to spread the Gospel. The Gideons are committed to following this command (my brother worked for them for a while before he passed away).
The Bibles are free, and they're usually put in a desk drawer, out of the way. Putting them in hotel rooms and all the other usual places is simply a good way to spread the Word.

17. That, and they make a nice place |
|
to write anti-Bush slogans when you are bored and watching the news.
Not that I would encourage vandalism--I would gladly pay the hotel the cost of replacing any free Gideon Bible that accidentally fell under my pen when I was scribbling in the air.

20. IMHO,That is only appropriate if you equate the Bible with Bush. |
|
And while Bush would have you believe he is a supporter of messages in the Bible, he isn't... and so I don't make the connection between the two. So writing on anti-bush slogans on a bible doesn't really strike me as appropriate. Maybe I'm just being too rational.

Has nothing to do with Bible or its religion--kind of like Bush himself.
