Day DUers vs Night DUers
I have noticed that there seems to be quite a different mindset on DU during the day than during the early morning hours. It is not just individual people, but it seems the whole tenor of DU does a dramatic change after midnightish pacific time zone time.

4. on the whole;
drunk, depressed, and/or sick... that tends to be the rule. im not saying this is the absolute truth. just that thats what the atmosphere seems like.

the later the night gets... it seems like the attitudes of us can get darker by the hour some nights.

8. Thanks, nice to know it's not just me
darker, gloomier, we need to go to sleep but can't and go round and round and round. Not saying this towards you in particular or anyone, just noticed generally. gloom.

7. Summary
Day: funnier in a lighter way, working towards things but not totally freaked out, some may say some more trite
Night: darker, more worried but not seeking what to do, some may say some more stuck

Of course I am NOT fingerpointing at anyone in particular, just noticing the tenor. In Lounge and GD and all.

3. What's the difference? I post at both times and I haven't noticed it. But
that doesn't mean it's not the case.

6. It's possible that people are just a little more tired.
Edited on Sun Jun-19-05 01:04 PM by I Have A Dream
I've been on late, and I know that I really should just go to bed because I'm exhausted, but I don't want to get off.

Also, it's possible that some people have insomnia, which would put me in a really bad mood or at least make my mind think differently than if it were rested!

9. Interesting thoughts....
I post both days and nights...for me, it seems as though people are more responsive at night. There are fewer of us then, of course. We seem to follow each other around the active threads and talk to each other. It seems friendlier to me at night. During the day, I don't get nearly the same number of responses...I have no idea why. For instance, today I've posted in 5 or 6 threads...NO responses as yet. Of course, that could change! I've challenged you, so you might very well respond. We'll see......

:hi:

11. I sorta had the opposite experince (as usual)
except for Miss Honeychurch (who is up in her daytime) it seems like I get very few responses at night. Maybe the night shift is a tighter clique of which I am not part. I will be on from about midnight to four, central time and get almost no responses. Then after I sleep I find that I have responses.

13. I've replied to you at night.
But I tend to stick w/ the same people late at night most of the time. They understand that I am posting at work and that it might take awhile for them to get a response to their posts.

19. just what I thought
you are too good to talk to me. I am not in your "inner circle"

This is not instant messaging, so I am always checking the "my posts" feature for replies. I usually reply when I feel like I have something to add - some grammer to correct, or a joke (or an original and probably lame attempt at humor) to share, or question to ask, or just to tell a story if the post I reply to has made me think about something.

I was hoping for more (or any) responses to this:

23. I would have replied
but I actually had the night off of work so I didn't log in during the witching hour (as I usually do).

Sorry. I'll try to catch you next time. Or just call me out-I'll be at work on the overnight shift on Monday. I usually can get to a computer (but not always).

15. Definitely agreed.
The night folks seem friendlier and willing to discuss other threads. Night folks seem to multitask.

The day folks seem dark and intent, only their threads matter, their issues must not be ignored.

Freepers are out in the day, odd little critters that pretend to be libruals.

I guess it is just a matter of opinion.

10. what bothers me is
the really good threads seem to take place in the wee hours.

probably due to participation by those hair-brained, weirdo left coast peeples. so i sleep through all the fun.

then when i DO discover the previously mentioned "really good thread", it already has 300+ replies, which means everyone that is going to has already read it and chimed in, so my meaningless attempt at self aggrandizement and/or gutter humor will be totally missed, or even worse, ignored. and what would be the point of dragging it back from page ten to page one, just to be ignored?

sigh. the crosses that i bear...!

:-(

14. There can be.
I post during the daytime somewhat but the majority of my posts are at night. I work all night so whenever I have a few spare minutes I log in and try to stay awake.
Some nights are really depressing. Some nights tend to push the envelope on what can be posted (at 2 am many threads will turn into a sex thread-you just can't help it sometimes). And some nights it's nothing but one big conversation on what happened to you that day where you will see the same people reply back and forth to each other (I've had quite a few threads like that).
The lesser traffic tends to make us night posters a more tight-knit group. We tend to know alot more about each other and sometimes it can seem even more cliquish to someone who is not there regularly. We don't go out of our way to be dark or to leave people out. It just turns into a conversation for a group of people who seem to know you pretty well, since many of us also have each other on our IM accounts too.

16. That all makes sense.
The threads I've seen are either personal, between a couple people, or depressive. Either way I don't post much. The personal seem too personal, maybe I should just jump in and say hi. And I am not on long enough due to computer sharing to be able to chat for long times. The depressive seem too depressive to get into late at night.

Thanks everyone. I do like this site.

18. I'm usually gone by five pm
when my wife gets home I shut down, but, every now and then I get to get on here in the evening, it's different. I told my wife last week that there were shifts here, she was watching something I didn't want to, so I was reading DU, when she was finished I said hold on I want to run through the threads once more.
To which she said once more, hell you've been there all day what's new. It was then I tried to explain that there were night people and day people, I wanted to see what the night people were saying.

During the day weekdays, I'm at work and I only take sporadic "DU breaks." At night, I'm at home and I can spend more time if I want.

And I love the night lizzards. They are silly and they are serious on the topics that matter.

Though I post both in the day and night; much more interesting threads, even though there aren't as many people on. And yeah, The Lounge at night "is" dark, but I prefer that too, I guess..

...I usually post in the LBN thread. At night, when I need to unwind from all the BushCo shit, I come to the Lounge where I'm among friends, whom mutually seem to want to unwind...
