better for you.

Father's Day History

Father’s Day, 3rd Sunday in June. The idea for creating a day for children to honor their fathers began in Spokane, Washington. A woman by the name of Sonora Smart Dodd thought of the idea for Father's Day while listening to a Mother's Day sermon in 1909. Having been raised by her father, Henry Jackson Smart, after her mother died, Sonora wanted her father to know how special he was to her. It was her father that made all the parental sacrifices and was, in the eyes of his daughter, a courageous, selfless, and loving man. Sonora's father was born in June, so she chose to hold the first Father's Day celebration in Spokane, Washington on the 19th of June, 1910.

11. Yeah, it is OK. Estranged from mine for years before he died.
Some are toxic, it's just the way they are. Didn't blame him, just chose to remove him from my life. Found out there are plenty of others out there to learn from and to love... To them, whether they are biological fathers or not, I say Happy Father's Day.

Nature does not require that every male actually 'grow up' in order for our species to survive. Nature needs lots of seed, and a few responsible males to take care of the business of seeing that little people thrive. There are lots of gents out there who never had children of their own but had love, kindness, and wisdom to share. A special breed, the men who manage to grow up and understand that all children deserve a man's love and dedication, even if their own dad falls short. To those who embrace the thankless and too often unnoticed job of setting good examples, defending the vulnerable, providing for the needy, and 'takin care o business', A VERY Happy Father's Day!

16. To an anonymous dad
Here's a story for you.

Long ago, I was playing on a playground which featured huge fallen logs for climbing - complete with craggy roots and jagged branches. I was jumping from one to the next, doing my own thing (never was much of a "joiner"), when my foot slipped on the smooth surface of the trunk, and I fell backward toward the projecting roots of the next tree. The back of my neck would have hit that projection hard - could have killed me, might have paralyzed me. But one of the dads who was there with his kids on the playground, reacted with a super-fast reflex and caught me.

Well, I was a stupid little kid and never adequately thanked him - just scurried off, on my way. So, where ever he may be now: Thanks.

19. Mine joined the ancestors in December 1998.
A pity he was a ditto head. But perhaps that can be blamed on metastized smoking cancer in the brain.
