112 miles to Stuckey's...111 miles to Stuckey's...110 miles to Stuckey's..

That South of the Border thread stirred up some memories from my days of Boston to Miami jaunts. There were hundreds of signs letting drivers know that Stuckeys is only a couple hours away.
The food sucked except for the pecan pies.

1. I just about went into shock when they tore down
"my" Stuckey's. It was a landmark for that exit.
Still can't believe it's gone. :(

2. Their pecan rolls
I'm sure I'd gag if I tried to eat one now, but, years ago, boy, they were great.

They sold those neat wall clocks that were cats with big eyes and tails that went back and forth, ticking off the seconds.

I loved Stuckeys.

4. We'd smoke joints all the way from Boston and cure our "munchie"
pangs at Stuckey's every trip.

16. I never had one straight
I don't even know if they're good, but I have some fine, fine memories of those old things at any number of Interstate exits.

All those years ago ..........................

3. But they still have the cleanest restrooms.
My kid and I always stop at Stuckeys when we pass one, for that very reason. :D Oh, and he usually leaves with one of their $3 tee shirts. :D

6. I think Shoney's is the MW version of Stuckey's
Pies and cat clocks and pecan rolls, sounds familair. I loved the one we had here but it closed years ago. Did the chain go out of business, I wonder?

10. Shoney's
They were more of a restaurant, as I recall. And, OH, OH, OH, speaking of stoned and having the munchies, their strawberry pie, oh, jesus, please, pull me up and get me back.........

http://www.shoneys.com/

Stuckey's I didn't think of as a restaurant. They were sort of the place that you had to run through to get to the restrooms, while the car was getting gassed up, and then, on the way out, you bought all kinds of candy and stuff for the next leg of the journey.

13. Oooh, okay
I thought Stuckey's a sit-down joint with pie and other gooey stuff. And yes, that strawberry pie at Shoney's was to die for! At the one here Jefferson City MO) they discontinued the whole pies a few months before shutting down. I was heartbroke.

I love your sig kitty, btw!! :D

18. Tell me about it!
It was hardly worth going after that. I had made a special trip there one night just for a damn pie and that was how I discovered they were no more.

Thanks, I may borrow that little lush!

You're online, doing DU, and you've not yet put your kitchen in order.

A girl after my own Leftie heart, indeed.

How did we ever live without google?

(Let me know how the pie turns out - I just might give it a shot - thanks!)

Oh, and I'm a guy, btw. Not that I mind being called "girl" occasionally.

Twenty bucks for a 14 oz container of divinity?

7. Anyone remember Nickerson Farms?
We had them in Kansas along the highways when I was growing up. They had the best fried chicken and a great gift shop and coolest of all...a honeybee hive in the wall with glass so you could see the bees, hive and honey.

They're all gone now. :(
