The Red box is a phone phreaking tool which simulates the sounds of coins being dropped into the coin slot of a payphone, so as to fool the phone into operating as if the coins had been inserted.

I think someone mentioned it above. Oh, the good old days when you could sing dialup tones into a phone and get a connection (or so the stories say...)
