My Cat Talks in the Subjunctive
Cats don't express themselves in words, but they do have an amazing range of utterances. Mine can talk in the subjunctive, which is pretty neat for an animal. Early in the morning, when he knows I'm not getting up, he greets me in the subjunctive, like in case you were thinking of getting up. . .

In fact much of his morning routine is in the subjunctive. He rarely uses the imperative except when I annoy him. He uses the declarative with event-driven comments, like the Windows program. I'm not sure how to characterize utterances such as when he wants the door open. He communicates distress, but it has a minor-key subjunctivity to it. Cats are neat. We usually think animals are stupid, but cats are smart.

1. their non-verbals lean to
the subjunctive as well - the pout; the back to you with the ears back. Very subtle and we are quick learners.
That is why it is so lovely to live with a cat.
