Edited on Mon Jun-20-05 02:59 PM by Dr Batsen D Belfry
I used to be in sales, and had the pleasure of calling on Westinghouse's Beaver, PA facility the first day it was owned by Eaton Corp.

When the receptionist picked up the phone and greeted me with her most cheerful voice, I burst out laughing and had to hand up.

"Good afternoon, Eaton Beaver..."

I kid you not

85. There's an Athol in Massachusetts
as well.

One interesting thing about Massachusetts is that so many of the cities and towns are named after their British counterparts. It's not so "strange" as amusing considering how we felt about the British a 100 years after they helped settle the country.

Thus, we end up with unlikely pronunciations of some places:

Worcester is pronounced "Wuster."
Gloucester is pronounced "Gloster"
Leicester is pronounced "Lester"
Leominster is "Leminster"
etc.

There is a Lake here in Massachusetts which is Lake Chargoggagoggmanchauggagoggchaubunagungamaugg

It's an Indian word that essentially means "You fish on your side, I fish on my side and no one fish in the middle."

78. Slapout, Oklahoma
"Scuse me huh, we are just Slapout."

-snip-

According to the "History (of) Beaver County, Vol. II", pg 242-244, the small town of Nye began serving the community September 6, 1932 from a couple of old frame buildings that were moved to a plowed field beside a dusty road where the Lemmons family began selling groceries, buying cream and selling gas in five gallon cans after (they) acquired a fifty-five gallon barrel for a gas storage space.

-snip-

It goes on to tell how that same year the state department contracted the road building of highway 270, which would be a sand and gravel road.

-snip-

Artie Lemmmons, helped in the grocery store. When an item was sold out, she'd usually say, "We're slapout of that." It wasn't too long afterwards that the highway crew began dubbing the town "Slapout" and everyone, except Tom, started calling it "Slapout."

And so goes the old joke in NW MN, Newspaper Headline: "Fertile Woman dies in Climax" (as the towns are pretty close to each other).

And yes, It's a weird name in Japanese, too, as is Shinshimashima or "new island island," which oddly enough, is located in the mountains.
