I was nominated to join the American Legion |
|
I went to my father's yesterday and he brought out this big envelope and told me it was for me. It had my name on the front, so I opened it. It was a letter stating that because of my service during times of war I was nominated to join the American Legion. I even got a pretty cool certificate with my name on it. The one thing they overlooked is, I never served in the military. My father and I have the same name, but our middle initials are different. He was in the Marines for 25 years and I'm guessing they screwed up. I kept laughing at him all night and asking him if he was jealous because I got nominated and he got squat..LOL. He said he will throw it out for me and I said, no way...you'll take it and ride the wave in my name. I brought it home, maybe I will frame the certificate..it looks pretty good.

I put it in the shredder....not because I dislike the American Legion. I believe there are people who are genuinely proud of their service and want to continue the tradition, but I'm not one of them. I didn't like military life and was happy to get out.
The Legion sponsors Boy's State which I think is a great educational experience for boys wanting to learn about leadership and I make an annual contribution to the Legion to support it. (Our son attended and enjoyed the experience) But standing up at a meeting and saluting......I gave that up 30 years ago....
