Poll question: Is rape ever funny?
Edited on Mon Jun-20-05 10:06 PM by progmom
It seems like every thread about sending republican crooks to jail has at least one homosexual rape joke. I'm having trouble with that.

a source of fear for the rest. We are the rapeable class. ;(

12. I'm proud of the comments in this thread.
I almost expected a series of "Republicans deserve to get raped" comments.

Thankfully, most DUers are to classy for that.

16. I don't think people would SERIOUSLY say that.
However, they might entertain the idea in a Ha Ha kind of way, knowing that it most likely would not happen. In the same way that people would joke about wishing such and such a politician would just die.

not rape, please! Given the choice between death and rape, I'd choose death.

21. Really, now?
I dunno. I saw a few very snide posts in GD in regards to a woman who prevented rape by repeating bible verses and eventually shamed her attacker. Several people thought it was oh so amusing.

I, on the otherhand, didnt find it the least bit funny. I dont find rape of anyone funny.

23. Well, that's an entirely different context in that in that case
a woman was actually being raped. And, no, there's nothing funny about that at all.

13. Uh, progmom? I don't think anyone's condoning rape.
I think it's more of a case of "taste of their own medicine," or (maybe better) "poetic justice" being wished on a group of people well-noted for extreme intolerance of (especially male) gays?

Maybe?

32. yes.
i remember seeing Edward Scissorhands when i was 18. there was a scene when the bully fell to his death...and the whole theater cheered. i was horrified. that was my first realization that we, as a culture, have a weird idea of justice.

26. Yes, ugly, but be honest with me: Can you truthfully say
that you wouldn't derive some small amount of satisfaction out of hearing that, say, Rumdum went to prison and got a little taste of Abu Ghraib, up close and personal?

I really think that when people say that, it's roughly 100% about vengeance, and 0% about condoning rape.

Listen to me, because I'll tell you the truth even when nobody else will:

Vengeance, ugly though it may be, is a deep, DEEP-seated human desire. We all want to see wrongs paid back to the perpetrator in kind--even those of us who will shrug off all kinds of stuff that's done to us personally will (if we're honest) admit to a deep desire for vengenance (delivered by society or circumstance) upon those who prey on others.

Capisce?

31. this is where Dukakis got in trouble, isn't it?
I am going to say that I don't think I would derive any pleasure out of Rummy or W or Cheney or any of them getting a taste of Abu Ghraib. I find the whole thing horrific and want to stop...now.

27. I don't think that scene was supposed to be funny
Over the top, sure; but not funny.

The movie was basically about honor among criminals. Viewed in that context, the scene carries some weight.

24. Violence in general
I can't handle well any movie where there are scenes of violence against women. I can watch guys get hacked up, blown up, or shot to pieces in movies all day without flinching. But since seeing "Looking for Mr. Goodbar" when I was in college, I almost get queasy when I see women get killed violently.

28. I hope this doesn't sound cliched
but rape is a method some men use to exert additional power and force over women. It's one of their tactics (in those individuals who commit it) to subjugate women and keep them under the man's thumb. I know it's sounds faintly feminist to point that out, but it happens to be a truly wretched crime that most men, regardless of their viewpoint, will never quite understand. Men might feel frustration, anger and hatred toward rapists who harm beloved family members, but they can't put themselves into the woman's shoes and actually know how downgrading a crime it really is. To be stabbed, robbed, assaulted or even mugged is nothing in comparison to the feeling a woman experiences during rape. Most women who live through any of these will suffer some PTSD as a result, but the feeling of being invaded through rape can never be fully erased from memory.

29. YEP! Very awful and I wish it on NO ONE
including BUSH and CO. BECAUSE:
1. It certainly does not improve a person in anyway. It does not humble them.

2.THERE would be another guy involved and you are encouraging him to rape! SERIAL RAPISTS! :puke:

34. It's not cliched. I've known a number of women
who have been raped (and there is a large percentage of the American populaton who don't realize how common it is), and what they've told me bears out everything you say.

A rapist is the lowest form of a sorry excuse for a human being, except for a child molestor. Just my opinion; others may disagree.

33. Never. Ever.
We recently had this _exact_ same discussion on a community forum that my husband and I administer in a blue state. I'd consider most of our members quite liberal, but this is one issue where the desire for vengeance really came out.
