O Fortuna velut luna statu variabilis, semper crescis aut decrescis; vita detestabilis nunc obdurat et tunc curat ludo mentis aciem, egestatem, potestatem dissolvit ut glaciem.
Going to hear "Carmina Burana" by Carl Orff tonight live :bounce: :woohoo: :bounce:

Quite a wonderful work.
My mother (who is a music teachers) is providing the childrens choir for a performance of it later in the summer.

Sounds pretty exciting.
BTW, is there a certain high quality recording CD or other similar works by him/others you or someone else can recommend?

I can't recommend another piece by Orff or a good CD with his pieces or Carmina Burana. The CD I have isn't the best either. That is one reason why I look forward to tonight. To hear a good performance.

10. I still like the first version I ever heard. |
|
Conducted by Rafael Fruhbeck de Burgos, it's now available as a "bargain disk."
www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B00005NPJO/qid=1119355521/sr=1-9/ref=sr_1_9/103-2114536-7332612?v=glance&s=classical
This version was recorded in the 60's. In fact, I bought it because of a review in "Hit Parader" magazine, which occasionally recommended classical recordings. (They also "turned me on" to Debussy's La Mer.)
The lyrics were written by wandering scholars of the Middle Ages & "rediscovered" in the 19th century. They'd been stored in a monastery--well hidden because they are definitely secular. I've wondered whether the final musical impression of grim power might reflect the fact that Orff premiered the work in Munich--in 1937. (The Nazis found the work frivolous--not at all like Wagner.)
A live performance of Carmina Burana is a great treat.

15. Hey, maybe we can meet for Carmen at least. |
|
To-night I have absolutely no time - going on vacation Friday and already afraid I won't be able to prepare my stuff in time. Lots to do (mainly my pension stuff).

18. Will there be dancers as well? |
|
If that piece of music were in English, WalMart would refuse to sell it.
I thought of this passage often when I was laid off and had to take a job for 1/3rd of my original salary:
In fortune solio sederam elatus prosperitatis vario flore coronatus quicquid enim florui felix et beatus nunc a summo corrui gloria privatus
Fortune rota volvitur: descendo minoratus, alter in altum tollitur; nimis exaltatus rex sedet in vertice caveat ruinam! Nam sub axe legimus Hecubam reinam
On Fortune's throne I used to sit raised up Crowned with The many-colored flowers of prosperity Though I may have flourished Happy and blessed, Now I fall from the peak Deprived of glory
The Wheel of Fortune turns I go down, demeaned Another is raised up Far too high up Sits the king at his summit Let him fear ruin! For under the axis is written Queen Hecuba

23. I actually prefer it without, though that's not how Orff intended it |
|
I think the music is so amazing on its own, the dancers are just gilding the lily, so to speak.

as long as the dances don't overtake the music. But the couple of times I've seen it with dances it was performed wonderful.
