The JustWait people can kiss my fucking ass!

http://www.wbir.com/news/news.aspx?storyid=26605

<snip>
While some find the message sexist in the way it targets girls, Scott Hughes, director of Just Wait, says it's really more about teenage boys.

"Guys are turned on visually by what they see, so it's really saying guys aren't men enough to control themselves, therefore you have to be careful on how you present yourself," says Hughes.

HEY BUDDY! Why don't you put up a billboard that says "Men: Don't be pigs"?? You know, it's one thing to teach teenagers that you should be abstinent, but it's another to try to change a girl just because men can't "control themselves". Fuck you. I'll wear whatever I want, whenever I want and if a man even TRIES to touch me in ways not allowed, you bet your ass he'll regret it. Fucking pricks. :grr:

i reject that whole notion...

women are beautiful and the human body it a work of art...

the person who wrote that sign is a hateful person...

Honestly, I have seen far worse things these days to get angry about. I don't agree with that person's statement, but I don't agree with a lot of things that are said by a lot of people.
It seems to me that you are insinuating that the men and women that sign is targeted at aren't able to make up their own minds about how they live their lives.

I was told a hell of a lot of things as a teen, I made up my own mind. I don't think that teens are that "stupid" that they will follow and believe every billboard, magazine, television and commercial ad they see.
As I said, I think the person that placed that ad is a little off, but he has every right to place it and you have every right to not like his opinion, but that's life.
I think too many people don't give the younger generation enough credit.

35. I AM the younger generation
You very well could've made up your own mind at that age, but I also know that a lot of people are so easily lead by others. And I know what it was like to be an insecure, self-conscious girl. I know what it's like to want the attention of boys because I saw all these really pretty girls on TV having it. Just because I could make up my mind doesn't mean it wasn't hard to not fall into pressures and circumstances that were bad.

I've never once said that the younger generation is stupid. I think just the opposite. But I think we have so much going on in our lives that another bit of pollution isn't going to help anything. I have two younger sisters (12 and 14) and I want them to be able to respect their bodies and who they are as individuals, not to be made feel bad because younger boys are looking at them in different lights.

And you're right, I have every right to an opinion and that's all I'm doing - stating my outrage.

54. Amen Blondie
About easily led girls. I think a billboard like this is going to most directly impact those who are least likely to have a positive attitude toward their bodies -- e.g., those being raised by fundies who are taught that their breasts are "dirty pillows" and that their role in life is to serve men and have babies. In other words, those who most need to know that rape has nothing to do with how you dress and is all about the other person's behavior.

idea of what is right being put up on billboards. Not even objecting to it being put up, since it is a matter of freedom of speech...but objecting to the reasoning behind it. And it's not just teenage girls... younger kids are influenced by these signs.

I don't ever remember an ad changing my life. And I especially don't remember a billboard making me think any different than I did.
I'm not saying that people don't have the right to object, but it sounds to me that this is another case of "Ozzy Osbourne's music made kids commit suicide". I thought that was bullshit then, and I think that saying a billboard will make kids do something is almost as ridiculous.

This is NOT about making a kid do something... it's about forming a kid's perception of what girls are supposed to do/be. It's sexist and regressive and damaging.

58. I understand what you are saying
And I guess being angry at this sign and the group that put it up is fine. But the point I was making is that if anyone wants to take a stand against this sexism, they should also take a stand against what is shown on television since 99% of it is demeaning to both sexes, they should refuse to buy magazines because most ads in them are sexist and they should start banning the music that is being shoved down the kid's throats. My original thought on this was that there are bigger fish to fry in the cause of this sexist bullshit than a billboard.

Many many of my peers are easily led and mislead into things. This sign would be no exception. Think about it. If a girl sees that, probably already feeling very insecure, she might be led to believe that any "attention" she gets, whether wanted or not, is her FAULT. That sign leads me to believe that the people who created it believe that the guy is not at all responsible for his actions.

But to not object to ANYTHING that is put in front of our faces doesn't make a whole lot of sense.

It's not about making up YOUR mind... it's about influencing the minds of children and others who aren't so enlightened as you. Sometimes, I look outside my own experience and knowledge to care about how others are affected.

53. As I said though
Objecting to it is fine and responsible. One thing that those signs are meant to do is to cause some sort of ruckus, and it looks like in this case it is working.
I was just saying that there is a lot more out there to be angry about than a sign that probably 99% of the people on this board would have never seen.
I have teen nephews and a niece and although sometimes I would like to question them on some of the ways they live, I remind myself that they are intelligent enough to make their own choices and sometimes mistakes. If I ever would see one of them heading toward trouble, I would intervene, but I respect their minds and opinions. It was the same courtesy that my parent's gave me.

This is important... and I for one appreciate someone posting it here where 99.9% of us wouldn't have had the opportunity to know it exists. It's like reading about Fred Phelps... I will probably never encounter the guy, but I understand the value of knowing what he is doing... along with Pope and the President.

You say that there are a lot more things out there to be angry about - that may be so, but just because this doesn't directly impact you doesn't mean there's more important things. I think teaching our children about respect for their bodies and selves is one of the most important things in life.

And you're right - 99% of people may have NEVER saw this sign, but at least 30 of them have by clicking on this thread. If we rolled over and said "well, there's more out there to be mad about" every time something came along, we'd all be sheep just like the damn Freepers we so adamantly fight against. I'm sorry, but I refuse to be led into sheepdom and I refuse to just give up because there's more to be angry about in this world.

I respect your position on this sign and the group that put it up. Once again I put myself into a position of trying to explain what I meant in the first place...lol.
I can't speak for the kids that might be swayed by a billboard, but in reading these posts I realize that it could happen. I just wasn't cut from that cloth and I didn't look at it that way. That was my mistake and I apologize if it seemed like I was minimizing your opinion on this.
Originally I looked at this as the same as saying that kids shouldn't listen to certain music because it's "Bad...bad...bad". I never held the belief that kid's are controlled by the music they listen to, but I see now that I was probably mistaken.

29. Here's the story:
Knoxville billboard aimed at teens raises controversy

The billboard was sponsored by JustWait, an abstinence education organization.

Scott Hughes is the director of JustWait.

Jennifer Sheehan says the billboard sends the wrong message.

A local billboard campaign is making motorists do a double take. It's not selling a product, but it is about advertising.

The billboards have been put up by the pro-teen-abstinence group, JustWait. The billboard reads:

"Girls, if it's not for sale don't advertise.

"It was just something to raise the awareness that girls are treated the way that they dress sometimes, unfortunately, and that they're so much more beautiful and precious. Their beauty is on the inside and not in the clothes they wear," explains Hughes.

College students who spoke to 10 News expressed differing views on the billboard's message.

"It probably could have been worded a little bit differently. I can see how it could be offensive to some people," says twenty-year old college student Lyndsay Smith.

But 19-year old Christina Wase sees value in the message.

"I think the reality is, if you're wearing stuff like that, you are in a way selling yourself to guys," says Wase.

Jennifer Sheehan works with victims of sexual assault in Knoxville. She says the billboard sends the wrong message.

"Once again, it really does put the fault of the crime onto the victim, and we all know that no one asks for that kind of crime to be perpetrated against them," says Sheehan.

Hughes says JustWait just wants to get their message out.

"Sometimes, when they dress that way and guys see them that way, they're not deemed as valuable, they're seen as an object," says Scott Hughes.

This is not the only billboard from JustWait, or even the first to generate controversy. Hughes says a punchy message makes s stronger point.

"We want to be catchy. We want to make sure people see the message. We've done some real catchy billboards in the past, and we have some up currently that generate some good buzz," says Hughes.

In addition to posting the billboards, JustWait workers go into middle and high schools to teach students how to say no to sex.

Otherwise, he wouldn't spend so much time thinking about the way a girl dresses and what that signifies.
All because she dresses a certain way doesn't mean that she "puts out". Just another fundie trying to make excuses for date rape.
